Foolproof Your Waterproof Terminology

You have countless reasons to stay ahead of changing conditions like weather. A busy schedule, regular running, work around your home or land, and so much more. You know the importance of preparing for rainy skies by packing your trusty rain gear. But do you know the difference between water protection levels in your women's rain clothing? Bass Pro Shops has the best waterproof clothes on the market, and with this quick breakdown, you'll know how to shop for your ideal rainproof gear.

DWR finish

A durable water-repellent finish, or DWR finish, typically consists of a surface treatment on the garment to provide mild water repellency. The fabric itself might still have no protection against water absorption. The DWR finish simply beads away surface moisture before it can soak. These treatments can be highly effective but often fade over time.

Water-resistant

It's sort of like how we're all "dessert-resistant." We can hold off for a while, but of course there's a limit. Water-resistant fabrics keep you dry through dew or pop-up showers, but the harder the rainfall or the longer you stay out, the greater the chances of water soak. Some fabrics such as nylon or polyester can provide water resistance even after dozens of washes.

Waterproof

This can be the trickiest term of all when it comes to water protection, because it's not as self-explanatory as it sounds. A garment can have waterproof fabric, but that doesn't mean it's going to prevent water seeping into inner layers. How's that possible? The seams. You might have a garment consisting completely of waterproof fabric, or containing a waterproof membrane in between the surface fabric and lining, but unless has special seam sealing, a heavy downpour might still cause water entry.

100% waterproof

That percentage makes all the difference when it comes to fully waterproof protection. In addition to using waterproof fabrics, a clothing manufacturer must take special steps with the seams in order to call their apparel "100% waterproof." Look on the product description for information about the seams, especially phrases like "taped seams" or "sealed seams." That's how you know those waterproof clothes will keep you dry when it counts.
