Remington Model 870 Express Pump-Action Shotgun with Hardwood Stock
The Remington® Model 870™ Pump-Action Shotgun is one of the most proven firearm designs in history. The 870 Express® is a rugged, value-priced workhorse, making it one of the most useful tools that an outdoorsman can own. The versatile, no-nonsense 870 Express can be used for hunting waterfowl, upland game, and deer, as well as a home defense shotgun, and informal clay pigeon shooting. At the heart of the ultra reliable 870 Remington is a receiver milled from a solid billet of steel for maximum strength, and twin action bars that prevent binding and twisting while cycling the action. 870 pump shotguns have great pointing characteristics. They come to the shooter's shoulder and acquire targets instinctively, and swing fluidly on fast flying birds. The Remington Model 870 Express Pump-Action Shotgun comes with an ultra durable laminated hardwood stock and fore-end, and a matte blue/black, bead-blasted finish on the receiver and barrel. The barrel has a vent rib and a bead sight, and uses standard Rem™ Choke screw-in choke tubes (comes with 1 modified tube). A durable, rubber recoil pad dampens recoil and helps shooter to stay on target for faster follow up shots. All 870 Express shotguns function with either 2-3/4" or 3" shotgun shells interchangeably. A myriad of aftermarket Remington 870 accessories enables owners to customize the 870 Express for specific purposes.

Avoid this model if you want to enjoy your gunDo you want a shotgun that jams 40% of the time and requires you to slam it on the ground to releases cartridges? Do you want to realize it is a machining issue that most 870 owners suffer through? Do you want to question if the gun will work in an emergency? Do you want a 2 yr warranty that conveniently expires when the problem becomes unbearable? Then by this the gun for you. Save yourself the headache and buy the Benelli Nova. I bought both the same day and the Benelli has never fail, but the Remington 870 has become a problem. Cheap gun made cheaply.

Best buy, simply.Made my research first, bought it brand new and made some changes.
Change the extractor for a non mim, put a follower spring police grade and put a stainless steel follower.
Never had a single issue with that gun.
Remington didn't spend time adding bluing or hi gloss finish to the stock, this way you won't be afraid taking it to the woods or the marsh.
Keep it clean and oiled and it will last forever.
Turkeys and ducks won't feel the difference !!!

Great budget pump gunI found myself without a pump action shotgun, and felt a need to correct this. I picked up one of these in 20 gauge last week, and I'm pretty happy with my new gun. It shoots to point of aim, and cycles smoothly. The chamber and bore are mirror smooth, so it seems Big Green have listened to consumers. It's a great gun for the money.

Awesome Shotgun and Straight ShooterI have had this firearm for 2 yrs now. The fit and finish are first rate, patterns really well. I have the 12 gauge model with the 28" barrel. Have used this shotgun for deer, turkeys, squirrel, and the occasional snake. Patterns better with larger shot ( #6+). Also shoots rifled slugs very well with 1.75" groups at 50 yards w/ a improved cylinder choke. I have skeet, improved cylinder, modified, full, & extra full chokes for this gun. Plan on getting a slug barrel for sabot slug. Overall great shotgun for hunting & can be used for home defense with the addition of a 18"-18 1/2" home defense barrel. Great product.

First ShotgunBackground
I bought this shotgun as with my high school graduation money. I was drawn to this model because of its immense popularity and versatility. This gun has treated me well all three years I've owned it. It’s aged a lot better than the laptop I had to buy for school and spent significantly more on.
Recommendation
I'd recommend it to just about anyone but especially new shooters or people trying to get kids into hunting and shooting. The 870 is a great beginner gun. It comes in youth and full-size models and has many interchangeable parts so you can fit the gun to you and your needs.
Criteria
When I started looking at shotguns, I wanted something that was durable, reliable, simple, and fairly cheap. I also wanted something that could take different barrels so I could hunt most of Iowa’s game with a single gun. I was going to college and didn’t have the money or space to keep a bunch of guns.
Review
The Remington 870 shotgun fit the bill for most of my criteria. It is simple to use and clean. It's durable enough to bang around the duck blind or withstand a freezing Iowa pheasant hunt. You can get different barrels and quickly turn it into a slug gun for deer. I have personally used it to kill pheasants, deer, turkeys, ducks, and a coyote. It is a very reliable gun if properly maintained and oiled. The 870 is also pretty cost effective compared to some other shotguns I looked at. If you want a good all around gun or something to keep in the truck, look no further.
No, this gun isn’t perfect. It likes to jam up if it is not well oiled. Obviously, it won’t out shoot some of the higher end Benelli’s, but for the price point, I can’t complain. I can’t wait to graduate college and be able to afford some nicer guns, but the 870 was a great place to start. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another, or eventually, buy one for my future kid.
Synopsis
The Remington 870 is an affordable and reliable starter gun. If you’re looking for something fancy and purpose-built, keep looking. Otherwise, pick up a solid gun for a reasonable price.

Shoots wellBought brand new in 2010. It was the first gun I ever bought when I was 18. Nearly 10000 rounds through it and it only jammed once. And let me tell you did it ever jam. Shell stuck in barrel during a round of skeet. Had to slam butt stock against ground while holding forend several times to get round to eject. Other than that it's held up well from everything to target loads to high brass slugs and buckshot. Points well and has a very sturdy and smooth action. I shoot lefty and I can honestly say I prefer the safety and slide release on the Mossberg 500 more. Although I find the Mossberg is alot more sloppy feeling with it's action and the forend feels too clunky and awkward. The Tang safety of the Mossberg is much more desirable than the crossbolt style of the 870 ( especially if you shoot left handed) The loading port on the 870 can be a pain while wearing gloves whereas the Mossberg doesn't have a a shell lifter in the loading port to obstruct loading shells. Overall it's a good gun although I do wish the ejector was screwed into the reciever like the Mossberg and not tack welded so it can be changed easily if it breaks. It's the first gun I got and I don't think I would ever sell it. It does what I need it to do. I would recommend cleaning the inside of the reciever and with fine emory cloth. Minor burrs from the machining process should be removed for it to perform better when cycyling the action. I really wish I had got a hardwood stock as opposed to the laminate. That's just personal preference. I'm not a fan of the laminate stocks. Either way, it shoots better, cycles smoother and disassembles easier than any Mossberg or Winchester I've shot. I should mention though. If you can get your hands on well maintained Ithaca 37...BUY IT. It outperforms all the other pump guns out there. The only downside to them is it is a lengthy process to disassemble and clean them. My Ithaca 37 made in 1954 is absolutely flawless and has never had an issue. But , at the end of the day... You can't go wrong with an 870. Hope this helps!

Remington is a Reliable ShotgunI own several different Remington shotguns in different models. I've had my Wingmaster for almost 32 years and it is my favorite. I've hunted everything from ducks to dove and quail to rabbits with it and have had no issues. It is truly the most reliable shotgun I own and earned 5 stars. I also have an 1100, an 870 Express home defense and a Supermag. I've had no issues with them either. I bought my son an 870 Express in 20 gauge about six years ago. This one dropped down to four (or below) stars. We've had issues with it. It fails to eject some of the shells and the action is not as smooth as the others I own. I have taken it apart and cleaned the heck out of it, but it still has the same issues sometimes, no matter what kind of shells we use. The stock also cracked and we had to Gorilla glue it. I don't feel like buying a new stock and don't think I should have to. Maybe we got a dud on that one. My son just bought his own 870 Express synthetic stock in 12 gauge to use for duck hunting. It failed to eject on several rounds, which cost him some ducks. I followed the suggestions on Youtube and buffed out the bore with the steel wool setup they recommended and it helped, but it is still not perfect. My son wanted to sell it, but I talked him out of it. He ended up buying a Beretta and has had no issues with it. I have been a fan of Remington as long as I can remember, but with some of these reviews I read, along with my personal experience, it makes me wonder if Remington has lowered its standards on the Express model. I would stick to the 1100 or Wingmaster and make sure you take care of your shotguns. This goes without saying, but keep them clean and oiled properly and you should be good to go.

Can you shoot slugs with this shotgun?
Asked by: niknakpaddywak
That's a great question. Slugs can be used with this firearm as long as the slug is designed for a smooth bore. When using this firearm for slugs do not use a choke tube any tighter than modified preferably skeet or cylinder.

Thanks for your question. The Remington Model 870 Express comes with one choke tube (Modified). Other chokes would be ordered separately; you would be looking for RemChoke models in the appropriate gauge.
