Bug Spray and Sunscreen Basics

If you spend time in the outdoors, you'll likely encounter plenty of bugs and sunshine. Be prepared for both with Bass Pro Shops wide assortment of bug sprays and sunscreen.

Insect repellent

Encounters with insects can be more than just annoying. They have the potential for insidious consequences like contracting Lyme disease and West Nile virus. Insect repellent comes in many forms including sprays, lotions, and portable devices. Common insect repellent ingredients include Deet, picaridin, permethrin, and citronella. Insect repellents like Deet can be applied directly to skin and most clothing. Permethrin, an on-contact insecticide safe for human use, should be applied directly to clothing.

As an alternative, Thermacell devices create a mosquito-repelling zone around the portable unit ideal for those who don't want to use sprays and lotions. Tabletop units work well on patios, porches, decks, camp tables, and poolside. Some battery-less mosquito-repellent devices clip on to clothing or a backpack for added convenience.

Sunscreen

Be mindful of SPF ratings when choosing a sunscreen. Sun-protection factor indicates how well a sunscreen protects against sunburn. The higher the number, the more protection the product will offer. The most common SPF ratings are 30 and 50+. SPF ratings refer to protection from UVB radiation and not from deep-penetrating UVA rays. If you want protection from both, look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Keep in mind, sunscreens will not afford all-day protection and will need to be reapplied periodically during prolonged sunlight exposure outdoors.
