Ideal mid-weight boot but for one major flawIt took a lot of time to arrive at this boot over others, Vasque and many other respected brands. And good as it is, there's one fatal flaw that most people will need to fix on their own: the stitched seams that hold the boot together are right where a proper toe guard should be, as is the case with their Breeze 3 too. If you hike in the rocky northeast, you're going to scrape the top of your boot along the underside of a granite boulder on nearly any ascent. Most of my stitching was severed within a moderate 3-day hike that Vasque said would not be covered by their warranty because it's not a 'manufacturing defect', even though it's certainly a 'design defect.' Luckily my retailer felt otherwise and exchanged them for a new pair. Applying 3 layers of KG's BootGuard over these seams down to the toe rubber has fixed this flaw for good. Oh, and the lowest of the three metal lace loops are actually *inboard* of all the other loops which makes it more difficult to tie and doesn't grip the ankle as well -- there's a reason every other boot in the world has these loops well *outboard* of the others. Shorter (63") waxed laces work a lot better than the supplied laces.
Otherwise, it's all good. Very much a cross between their Breeze 3 and St. Elias boots. A notably stiffer shank and midsole than the Breeze is easier on the foot over long days of rocky trails. A smooth leather upper that's more-supportive than the Breeze doesn't get caught on trail scrub. The outsole doesn't have the absolute smooth rock traction of the Breeze MegaGrip compound (though it's close), but its deeper squarer lugs work better in loose terrain and should prove more durable. It has the same perfect sneaker-like fit (for me) using the Breeze last with a fine blend of cushioning, and arch and ankle support. Their stock footbeds actually worked better with this boot than the Superfeet Blue I often use in other shoes. Their UltraDry actually breathes as well as GoreTex and my samples were entirely waterproof. But they're noticeably more-agile, compact, lighter, less-overkill oftentimes than St. Elias and their ilk with a better "trail feel" but not the intrusion to the feet of the Breeze (and their ilk) over every pebble.
For me, they're the "goldilocks" boot between the burlier trail runners or lightweight mesh mid-height models and the multi-day heavy-backpack super-stiff near-mountaineering styles.

Calico killer from
comfortable but..I purchased these boots for a december yosemite trip. Very comfortable out of the box, look well made. No issues with waterproofness or traction, my only issue with these boots is the traction on hard surfaces when the soles are wet. I thought it was just the ice and snow I was walking in Yosemite but almost fell down the stairs at work when it rained. Very good boot overall.
