The 686 SSR is built on S&W's stainless steel L-frame, with a 6-shot cylinder. Chamber mouths are chamfered to ensure smooth reloading. The muzzle has been recessed to prevent damage to the target crown. The 686 SSR uses a hammer-forged trigger and hammer, instead of injection molded. A bossed mainspring reduces the amount of force necessary to pull the trigger, and lends itself to better accuracy. A removable front sight post allows shooters to install aftermarket sights for self-defense or hunting without taking it to a gunsmith, and the rear sight adjusts for fine-tuning windage and elevation. The 686SSR comes standard with ergonomic wooden grips that are designed to force the shooter to take a high handhold on the revolver for enhanced control when shooting rapidly in double-action mode.
