Beeg BoyThis reel is very powerful and with 2 speeds very quick. We used the reel offshore in the Bahamas and the performance exceeded our expectations.

Shimano TLD30II's smart buyAfter using TLD15’s over five years for in-shore and bay fishing, I trust the TLD design. Moving further off shore to target bigger fish meant a big investment to upgrade my gear. The TLD30II two speed reel was a smart choice to start with. It’s a has everything that I needed; large spool capacity; 2 speed gear ratio; and the lever drag which is perfect for trolling. Only negative is that the mounting lugs must be installed before spooling. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Can't miss classicBought another TLDII to fill out the lineup, my 2nd TLD 20. The 20 is probably the best in the series as far as ergonomics. With Spectra backing you have ample room and power to fish 40 or 50lb for any tuna under 100lbs. Unlike the 30 which is where the reels width starts to create side to side torque as you reel under pressure from a fish, the 20 is narrow and does not hit you hard with the side to side torque. Like all tldII the drag is super smooth and never misses a beat. Light , easy to use with a now classic look

Another Shimano triumphThe Shimano TLD is a reel that I have used and enjoyed over the past 20 years. I have purchased 6 TLD's and had to repair only one, and it was very minor. They are all still in service. I find them to be rugged and dependable, fishing the waters of San Francisco, Mexico, and now in Panama. Big fish do not intimidate a Shimano fisherman! While I have not tried out my new TLD30II 2 speed reel, I am looking forward to more success in the second week of January 2013.

Absolute beastOne of the best conventional saltwater reels for the price. This reel is solidly built and performs flawlessly. I do not feel I would need to spend more to get any better quality and performance. I use this for grouper and appreciate the 2 speed.

great bang for the buckI have two TLD 50s and a TLD 20 and have been using them for the past three years without a hitch. The drag mechanisms are smooth and responsive and the graphite body is so much easier to handle than comparable steel models. A great performing reel. Highly recommended.

shimano 50wanted this reel for a long time, I have a 15, and a 20 and four 25's and getting ready to get the second 50! Awesome reels, I have starr rods for all of them. I don't stock anything else on my boat and I get no complaints!

superbei have a nice time and great feeling of biggame fishing with old model tld 2 speed.this one is great.even cheeper. normaly i hate shimano and i love daiwa but this...look just this my frien catch the tuna in italy close to rome over 230lb with tld 20!!!! try it you will enjoy it
How does one keep the line even on the spool without a levelwind? I understand without a levelwind it's possible to cast further, and won't bind and snap the line.

Using a right-handed reel, use your left thumb to guide the line left-right while reeling in--with a left-handed reel, it's just the opposite

casting
How is the reel with casting out. I work on a stationery rig and they allow us to fish. Would I just slide the drag lever up a little from free spool to adjust for lure weight / casting drag?
Asked by: ROV1
Keep some pressure on the spool with your thumb as the spool rotates when you cast. This takes some practice and there is kind of an art to figuring out when to put pressure and how much. Most conventional reels have some sort of casting control that you can use to slow the reel down and reduce backlashes. However, the more you slow the spool down the less distance you get. The real experts like to use zero cast control and do it all with their thumbs.

Shimano TLD30IIA or Daiwa STTLD40-2SPD
Which one would you go with?

Shimano, because in my 35 years of fishing Shimano, they have never let me down. I find Diawa quality to be very good but not as good and very comparable to Shimano pricing.
