Shimano's® Tiagra® Conventional Two-Speed Saltwater Reels deliver the smooth and unrelenting power today's performance-minded big game fisherman rely on. Every Tiagra Conventional Saltwater Reel is machined from solid 7mm pipe stock aluminum for relentless strength and secure alignment under duress. Features smooth push-button shifting backed by permanently lubed A-RB® Anti-Rust Bearings for easy handling at all times. Traditional style drag curves on most models provide an area of low drag pressure just above strike level—great for holding baits in the wake, but light enough to reduce the chances of pulling the hook out of the fish's mouth. LRS models feature a special drag curve for fishing heavy lines with extra-tight drag settings. Line recovery in inches per handle turn.

Great ReelWow its what I have to say after fishing with other brands I am totally amazed on the performance of the reel, took it out for the first time of the Kona coast and landed a 186lbs Yellow Fin! from the drag setting to the retrieve everything was more that I expected. I currently own the 130, 80 and I am adding a 50 and 30 to complete the have full set. Awesome, awesome!

50 LRSA, 30Worked on charterboat that had these for seven years. 365 days a year operating. 80lb mono on the 50 and countless marlin, nice tuna to 100/150lbs, and nice wahoo to 50lbs or so...no problems, except on drag replacement in those seven years.
The 30's were worked even more handling most of the bonito, smaller yellowfin to 40lbs and bull mahi to 40 also and wahoo in the same range. Also small marlin to 200. Did not have any problems.
Had penn internationals on the boat before that, and their drags would need service every other marlin or yellowfin in the 60lb range and up. We would mark them with tape. In my experience reels are more than proven trolling. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

good reelI brought the ti16 to Canada for big muskie it handled it perfectly fine. I also went to Florida and caught a lot of tuna ranging from 50-200 pounds with 80 lb braided dacron.

Shimano vs Avet-ProI own a Shimano Tiagra 50WLRA a Penn VS70 and 2 Avet-Pro EXW50/2 reels. The Avet-Pro is by far the better reel for the money. The Avet has more line capacity, higher and smoother drag, and is just as durible as Penn or Shimano. The Avet is lighter weight and comes in a variety of colors, plus Avet is made in America. I'll take the Avet any day and I always hope the bigger fish hit on my Avet while I'm out trolling.

Excellent ChoiceThe Shimano Tiagira 2-spd reels are an excellent choice for big game fish trolling. They are tough, strong and smooth. One of the most important features for me is the extra loud clicker, it can be heard over engine noise at trolling speeds.

the toughest real money can buyI used the biggest one of this set of reels to catch tiger sharks of the east coast. I landed a 2,500 lb.
one on this reel. It's the best and the toughest money can buy.

Work itI have been working on charter boats in Dauphin island Alabama for four years. Of all of the trolling combos, the tiagra is the most numerous. Countless captains and deckhands as myself love these reels. The drag is so much smoother than the competitors. These reels are built to last! Weekend after weekend we reel in 170 pound tuna and these things have yet to break! I love this product as a deckhand and a fisherman!
Off shore saltwater reels do not have a level wind.

i am unsure of which shimano that would fit my needs.i am considering the calcutta 700b cte, this one above the tyrnos 2-speed,or the tld 2 speed iia.
i fish offshore bluewater for king mackerel cobia dolphin,etc. and use only pro-line 300 yds+ 50 lb. test. cost is not a factor.

Can the small Shimano Ti16 be an exelant surf reel for rays and other fish

It's a great reel,but the max.drag is a shy of 29 lbs. and if your sting rays are 45-100 lbs,then your going to spend a lot of wasted time babying it in for the catch.I would at least get a reel that can handle the right drag in it specs. that will hold in the drag higher and a lot better. Maybe the TI80WA model in the 44 max drag lbs. or one in the Penn at least 80 lbs.of drag.
