A must have for the Serious fishermanWe have found so many uses for this reel it’s an amazing product with virtually unlimited applications from Kite fishing to deep dropping and trolling this does it all.
Per the manufacturer, the Shimano ForceMaster Electric Reel - Model FM9000 reel needs to be plugged in to operate. As soon as it’s unplugged it will shut down. The motor will run for approx. 2000 hours before needing to be replaced.

Does the battery have to be connected to the reel all the time or can I walk around the boat to land the fish. Does the reel have an internal battery that holds a charge. And what size 12 volt battery does it take.

There is no internal battery for this reel. For the electric reel to work it has to be plugged in. If you choose to reel in manually you can have it unplugged and the reel will still work just not as an electric reel.

Thank you for your question. The Shimano ForceMaster Electric Reel - Model FM9000, is powered by a 12 volt battery connected to the reel with the included cord with alligator clips.
