Not smooth at allBrand new right out of the box it performed worse than my reels that are 25+ years old. I have NEVER been so disappointed with a new reel in all of my years of fishing.

Very pleased with my reel.I purchased a 300 size Cardiff during the winter of 2017/2018 and have used it extensively all year. I put it on an Ugly Stock Elite medium heavy, fast action rod. I have used this combo to catch pike, walleye, largemouth bass, yellow perch and the largest rainbow trout I've ever caught.
The Cardiff is far superior to my 6500 size Abu Garcia C3 in terms of testability and comfort. It sits lower on the rod for better balance and casts much further and feels much smoother. I leave two of its internal brakes "on" and set the tension knob to allow the lure to drop fairly quick. Using a slowly accelerating without a snap cast, I haven't had a backlash for several months.
The fit and finish is very good and I think the reel is very attractive. It is however fairly heavy and on the Ugly Stik can be tiring to use all day until you get used to it. Now this is the combo I grab when I go out for anything other than ultralight sized fish.

Great realI bought 1 of these 3 years ago and 2 more last year and have not had any problems. I have always used ambassador I have c3s c4s rockets pro rockets and the Cardiff is as good as any of them. I am not easy on reels either this has layed on the bank been in dirt and water and no problems. This reel casts so good and I have caught a ton of fish on it

Worst reel on the marketI have seen toy reels work better, the first one broke right out of the box, the 2nd one waited until it's first cast at the lake and then broke. There is a pin or gear inside that breaks. Should have listened to the reviews warning of this. What a waste of money, save yourself some trouble and get a Spider-Man combo, it will work much better

The new recruitJust purchase this at Cabelas here in Oregon. Matched the Shimano Cardiff (401A) with a 10'6 SST Okuma rod. Can't really give my full review yet, but I'll attach some pics. I'll give a full review once I test it out Salmon fishing(Bank) and Trolling with it on the Columbia River,Buoy 10 and Nehalem Bay by Tillamook, Oregon. Reel feels solid i must say but I'm a Shimano guy. Rips some mouths!

Do not buy Cardiff reels !I own 3 of these reels for saltwater use. They have all fallen apart. The fitting that holds the handle to the body of the reel came off on all 3 and is not repairable. I wrote to Shimano several times to no avail. Recently I spoke with a sales person at the local fishing store and he said they have had numerous complaints of the reel falling apart. I would not recommend purchasing this reel.

double cowgirl?I am a weekend warrior when it comes to musky fishing and enjoy using the large bladed bucktails, ie double cowgirls. Unfortunately I have burned through two reels already after approx. 50 hours of use as the handle shaft begins to egg out significantly where it attaches to the side plate.
If you use for musky fishing with low torque baits, get it. Great drag and good casting. If you want to use for lures with significant torque cast after cast, do not purchase.
Would you recommend this reel for targeting 40lb+ Flatheads and Blue Cats?

Yes this reel would work for this.

I fish nice sized cats, and tuna and bay bass, is the 400 capable?
I use crankbaits, lures, jigs, live bait, and dead bait, will this reel work for salt and fresh? Heaviest is around 100lb.
Backlash? Or does it have an anti backlash
Asked by: Ayybrah
Thank you for your inquiry. Per the manufacturer, the model CDF400A of this reel has a maximum monofilament line capacity of 165 yds. of 20 lb. mono. If you are using braid, Shimano suggests that you use Power Pro braided line. This reel has a braid capacity of 305 yds. of 50#, 180 yds. of 65# or 160 yds. of 80#. These would work great for what you're going after. This reel does also some with Shimano Super Stopper Anti-Reverse.

I'm thinking about getting a 401A for stripers and catfish. I'm a bit concerned about the fact it only has an 11 lb drag. Seems light for this reel..
Can i add some more drag pressure by swapping out the drag washers?
Asked by: OmarG
I have caught a 20 lb carp with this same 401 reel. I din't use all drag. I am certain this reel will have no problem with 40 lb catfish. Unless you are fishing for the 100 lb trofey catfish, your concerns are ABSOLUTELY unfounded. Don't worry too much about paper statistics. A little BPS size 10 reel has 12 lb drag, and this 401 monster has only 11? Isn't that suspicious to you? Paper statistics are bull, total bull.
And as for stripers... please, you can handle those with a size 10 reel. What is a big striper - 10 lbs? That's nothing.

What do they mean by non-disengaging level wind
Asked by: Catdaddy1971
Typically on a "disengaging" levelwind reel the mechanism that moves the line back and forth over the spool to evenly guide line back onto the spool when reeled in, is disengaged, as is the crank handle, when the freespool button is depressed, allowing for longer, drag free casts since only the spool moves.
Before these were invented levelwinds were call "knuckle busters" because that spinning handle, during a cast, could really take the hide off of your knuckles.

will the 400 hold 100 yards of 12 lb test lead core
looking for a really light reel for lead core trolling
Asked by: wamboltwill
Wamboltwill I would suggest Using a strong braid the best is suffix 832 and lead core extended leaders only my opinion some don't like the super lines because there is not any give. The great part is it cuts through the water like a razor getting your umbrella rig to where it should be.
