Shimano Baitrunner OC Spinning Reel
The long-standing king of live bait spinning reels, the Shimano® Baitrunner continues to improve with each new model. The Baitrunner feature lets you freespool with the bail closed, employing an adjustable secondary drag; and it can be flipped off instantaneously when you are ready to set the hook and bring the fish in. The XT-7 graphite frame and rotor provide exceptional strength and rigidity while cutting down on weight. Other assets include Dyna-Balance rotor control, cold-forged aluminum spool an oversized power roller, Propulsion Line Management system, fluid Drive 2 gearing system, Super Stopper II anti-reverse system, Direct Drive Mechanism, and Varispeed Oscillation system.

Great reelUsed it to catch Salmon on Lake Michigan handled a 23lb with ease. Might add the 6000 series to my collection as well.

Exactly what I neededI got my first Baitrunner 8000 as a gift almost 5 years ago. We loaded it with braid and headed south. It has surf fished, inshore, slightly offshore, back yard creek, Lake Erie to the Gulf of Mexico. Yeah sure it is overkill when the pike and Muskie are hiding but a Bass is a Bass however you catch it. My BR has been used consistently as a salt reel for the past 3 years now with little maintenance other than a easily remedied sticky bail. After looking across the board I keep coming back to this shimano which seems to be the best value in my opinion.

Best Reel you can ownThese are absolutely the best bait runners on the market, the live line is adjustable to be so sensitive that the line spools right out on a run, I can not same the same for the reels that I have. The reel is small and compact but the drag is very powerful and smooth. I run 4 of these for stripers with my wife, they are our reel of choice and they can handle fish in the 40 to 50" range with no problem. I have been fishing 2 of these reels for 4 years now and not have one issue

Good Mid Price RealI bought two of these units this spring. Caught a ton of Stripers on this reel with live mackerel. The bait runner feature works great and the tension knob means you can easily set the tension when you have a larger bait on.
Only down side is the bail wire slips within the screw that holds it in place when guests try to flip it after having retrieved the swivel past the first guide and created a lot of line tension. Not sure if this would be an issue with mono line, but I run braid.

shimano bait runner oc 4000 and 6000I have taken these reels channel catn on the river many times this year and they're performance was outstanding! the main and bait runner drags adjust in very precise small increments paired with my whisker seeker rods I could horse a 28" channel in with no slip on the drag or let it run as fast or as slow as I thought necessary. closing the bail by turning the crank was stiff when they were new, with a little use the bail closes easier. I have only had these reels 3 or four months so I cannot attest to they're longevity; I have used shimano reels for years they always work with no returns for malfunctions I will buy more of the bait runners this year, I have some Whisker seeker rods in need of a reel.
TAKE SOME TIME TO WET A LINE work isn't that important. db

Looking forward to thisI recently ordered a new Shimano Baitrunner reel (8000OC). I have had several Bairrunners in the past and I think my first was a 4500 that I purchased more than 15 years ago. I am buying this one to replace the 4500. I know that everything won't last forever and the 4500 finally gave up the ghost, or at least doesn't perform as it should (sometimes the bail does not close all the way). Might be a minor repair but I can't wait. So - I am buying this new one for an upcoming Cape Hatteras trip. I look forward to it working well for me and will post a final review when I get back. Tight lines!!

Great reelBought this BTR8000OC as a replacement for an older shimano bait runner (BR) of mine. Wow! This reel is everything I expected and more. The shimano quality is far superior to other BR reels I've owned in the past. The BR drag works great with live bait and the primary drag was flawless, landed a bull red with ease. Paired it up with a 10' surf rod and the balance is perfect.

what is the difference between the baitrunner D and the Baitrunner OC?

The Baitrunner D has the line propulsion system and weighs more. According to reviews the baitrunner OC actually preforms better and has less problems.
