Ugly StikThis is my first ever Ugly Stik and I have been using this for pier and river steelhead/salmon. I have the 9' MH and I just don't like it at all. The tip is too soft to detect bites and gives the rod a weak hook set. I also have problems casting accurately with this. When fishing rivers you need to be able to put your lure in tight spots and the flimsy tip leads to wildly inaccurate casts. I have always thought this would be an issue when I picked up other Ugly Stiks in the store, but never knew first-hand until now. The best use I have for this rod is cat fishing. You can definitely find better value rods for a few more dollars that will allow you to fish much more effectively.

Great Rod! PNW Steelhead/SalmonThis rod was a great purchase (9' Medium spinner). Picked up a few months ago after researching a few options and glad I went with this one. I have landed a handful of chromers so far with it - biggest has been around 35" (around 15 pounds) and this rod handled it like a champ. Sensitive enough to feel the light takes as well. I have not had any issues with the guides as other reviewers have mentioned (they were from a few years ago - I'm not sure if Ugly Stik has since changed their guides). I run a braided line to a fluoro leader and the knot that passes through the guides every time I cast has not made any chips or dings/kinks in the guides whatsoever. I've dropped this rod plenty on rocks and it has fallen a few times after leaning up against my car - no issues. I highly recommend this rod.

Strong RodI purchased the 9ft medium rod which is about 310g, a little bit heavy for me. And it is a little bit tip heavy. I think I should purchase the medium light instead of medium, for lighter weight. The medium is very strong, which can handle a big fish easily. The tip is very soft, which can be good or bad. The guides of the Ugly Stik Elite Salmon / Steelhead are much stronger than the normal Ugly Stik Elite spinning rod, because each of the guides has two stainless steel legs, instead of single leg guide of the normal Elite spinning rod. This is very good for catching a big fish. If you are not going to catch a very big fish I recommend the normal Elite spinning rod, for light weight.

Wonderful Rods! These rods are tough to beat for the money...strong, sensitive and feel great in action. I have fished with many of the pricier name brands, but none, especially with Ugly Stik's newer design, have prompted me to fork out the extra cash when these Ugly Stik Elite's are available. I have also read where some of the old-school Ugly Stik fans are complaining about the new design, but they need not worry...these rods are tough as nails, and will still take twice the abuse of more expensive rods.
I would like to know the length of the rod and would this rod be good for large salmon 40 lbs. and casting from shore.
and what size or type of spinning reel would that would be best for this type of fishing. I'm in Washington State and the Salmon ON!
