Q&A
The Rapala® Shad Rap® RS is a plastic version of Rapala's legendary, balsa Shad Rap. The durable Shad Rap RS rattles hard, suspends and produces a different wobble from its wooden brother. Because it's heavier, the RS is easier to cast. It's a deadly lure when casting or trolling for bass, walleye, salmon, trout, pike or other freshwater game fish.

catch allI've bought many of these Shad Rap RS in size #4 and they work great for large mouth, Spotted Bass, White Bass, and big Crappi. This and the Flicker Shad are definately the ones I use 80% of the time.

Good Cold Water BaitI have used these in the Fall when the water starts to cool and have found that bass, perch and pickerel like to eat them. I vary retrieve speeds and stop and start; I let it suspend and then twitch it. I use basic colors like Shad, Silver, and Silver/Blue. Size #4 has been most productive for me, fishing in 4-7 feet depth. Good luck.

Rapala RS 4 luresI have purchased many of these great lures and they will catch any fish that swims. However, about 1/4 of these lures will not track straight when trolled and there is little you can do to correct this problem.
The RS 5 model is less prone to have this tracking problem.

UncertainI don't really know how to take this lure just yet. I have seen some nice size small mouth track it but not strike. Wondering if this might be a nice pre fall kinda lure to keep a hold of. The lure has great action and movement in the water and changes dept fairly quick so this may be a little surprising to predator fish. I'll find out heading down to KY to do some fishing next week and see how it does there.

Rapala has the greatest reputationCast out the lure and the bass jump into the boat and commit suicide
I live in northern Indiana and mostly fish a clear lake with plenty of drop-offs, and a big flat. It is stocked with muskie, walleye, pike, and smallies. is there any all-around good color for these fish. any other advice would be helpful. thank you

There isn’t really a “Best” color to use when fishing. One color may work better one time but not as well the next time you fish. So, when selecting a lure color take a look at your surrounds (landscape and wildlife) to determine the color of lure to use. If the water is dark and murky (or stained) use bright and/or fluorescent colors that can draw the fish’s attention to the lure. If the water is clear, look around if the area and use colors which blend with the surrounds. If the area is rocky use a brown, tan, or a similar color. If there is grass and weeds then use more of the green colors. Each location will be different so try a good range of colors. Thank you for your question.

is this or the rapala shad rap an all-round better crankbait for bass?
i know this is the rs version of the rapala shad rap.
i wanted to know if you thought this or the regular rapala shad rap was better.

bigfishken said it right, they are both solid lures, but which one works for you depends on where you fish and how you fish and what you are fishing for.
As a mostly smallmouth fisherman, I prefer the RS series. The 'suspend' is the best piece for me. Think crankbait that you can turn into a jerk bait at will. If you try this with any other crank bait, it rises on the pause - real bait fish don't rise when they stop swimming. I've found that the jerk after the pause is when the fish hit.
