Best reel everI had a Stradic reel that seized up on me while battling a bull red. After that I scraped it for parts and bought this size 30 model about 3 years ago and couldn’t be happier. I paired it with a MHX (mudhole) custom 7’ Medium rod and spooled it with 30# Yo-Zuri super braid. It’s very balanced and will throw just about any lure in my arsenal 20-40 yards with ease. I’ve caught trophy bass, bull reds, and slot snook with this set up. The drag on this reel is more then most anglers will ever use at 20# and it’s super smooth. One of the only reels that uses plasma coated washers, combined with 4 carbon fiber discs. The 11+1 bearing system has a anti reverse that stops on a dime. Some of the reviews on this reel are bad, I can’t speak for them, but the specs and numbers on this reel, combined with actual use, have convinced me this is the best reel in its price range!

Buyer beware! Never again for me!First, I will say that I do have the 1st gen of this but reading other reviews doesn't sound like they made the right mods for this gen series reel. It lets water in so bad it corroded all the gears in the body within a year tops. I literally had to take it apart and file down the main gear drive as well as the smaller gear shaft in the rear body NOT ONCE but THREE TIMES and it still noisy but functional is about the BEST I can call it though I haven't fished with it since (afraid to test it out in action now). It had corrosion so built up it looked like baracles on the gears, lol, but not LOL. For the same price I highly recommend Shimano Stradic or (and this is where I'm leaning myself) the Penn Clash OR for less money and WAY BETTER QUALITY Penn Battle II (my brother has this one and works great even after 2 years of the same inshore kayak fishing). Bottom line here.. Quantum has work to do and is the Ford of reels ( looks great but fails you) while Penn and Shimano are the Toyota/Nissan of reels (looks good AND will more than likely NOT fail you).. Buyer BEWARE.. you've been warned! :-)
tight lines and hope this helped!

Plastic CoverThe new "Unibody" frame only applies to the upper part of the reel. The lower part of the reel is nothing but a plastic cover over the gears. This plastic cover is held against the metal frame by two screws on the 30 model. So, instead of a metal side plate held on by at least 4 screws, there is now a plastic cover with two screws. I don't see this as a design improvement. I bought this online after seeing reviews, but I would not have bought it had I known about the plastic cover. The reel I received had grease visible along the seam between the plastic and metal, so I don't see how it could keep water out of the gears.

Is this a reel that would be balanced to a 6’6” medium spinning rod. I will be using 8lb test monofilament fishing for trout and bass
Asked by: Julie fishwoman
I know I'm late to answer but this really wouldn't be ideal for that if you're referring to the freshwater species. On a medium rod for black bass and freshwater trout you would want a lighter reel, this being an inshore is more for the larger fish encountered near shore salt conditions. If it's a medium saltwater rod for sea bass and trout it would be fine.
