Rated 1 out of 5 by t101 from Cheaply Made I've owned Penn reels for over 35 years. I purchased 2 of the 9m's. Out of the box, neither reel's drag was adjustable by more than 1/4 a turn. I thought they had installed too many drag washers. Who knows... I decided to use them anyway and rebuild them myself this winter. After 3 trips and maybe a total of 10 fish each, one reel fell off the rod seat. The seat was till attached to the rod, the screws fell out (all 4). I suppose they are in my bilge. I inspected the second reel and found the main shaft that the handle attaches to was very sloppy. Something inside was coming loose. I sent them both back for a refund. I don't want replacements. I lost money on the line and shipping.

It started grinding and making noise, then the main screw on the side of the drum fell off along with the spring while I was reeling in. I checked everything before use so I don't understand what happened but, this reel was never the smooth operator that Penn used to be known for. I wont buy another - had the same issue with two of the line counter models and was hoping this would be different. I would not waist my money, time or effort on this reel.

My go to reel has lasted 23 years without so much as the occasional snag (operator error). I recently ordered a few replacement parts, to get it performing again, like new. I hope to get another decade or so out of the repairs. I also just purchased another new reel for one of my grandsons. It will be for him to use while grandpa exposes him to the sport of fishing. It is an ideal reel for both beginners, because of its simplicity, and for those who need to rely on it performing when it counts.

Should I get the 9M or the 209M?

I will mainly be using this for freshwater catfish and carp. I have a 9 ft rod. Should I get the 9M or the 209M and why? What are the differences between the two? Thanks!

Thank you for your inquiry. It is going to depend on the size and weight of the fish you're going after and how much they fight. If you're going to be fresh water fishing for catfish and carp, the 9M will probably be enough. Remember, this is also a round reel and not a casting reel. The 9M has a line capacity of 250 yds. of 15 lb. monofilament, and 470 yds. of 20 lb. braid. If the catfish you're looking for weigh more than that, go with the 209M.

Which size for striper and hybrids?

Hi, you might try SKU: 254714. Monofilament line should be at least 20 pound test but 30 pound test is ideal (40 or 50 pound test is not extraordinary). Although you can use 30 pound test braided line it is so thin (.011 inch diameter) that it is actually a bit dangerous to use for baitcasting, you can cut a finger to the bone in an instant.

Is 209/309 a good all purpose reel?

I do mostly pier fishing but also do some surf and boat fishing. Would this reel be a good all purpose reel I could use for all three types of fishing?

anti reverse?

i saw someone else ask this and two people said it did and two people said it didnt saw does this reel have anti reverse?

There is a slight backwards movement before it locks in but it sounds like a solid lock to me and I am happy with my 309. I am guessing that it is 1/32 to 1/16 inch of play in the line before it locks in.

What size weight should i use for surf casting?

I use 20 pound test line and want to cast over 50 yards... I am experiencing backlashes when I cast now.

You can add rare earth magnets inside the cover side opposite the crank pretty easily. You can case your line out over 50 yards with the Penn 309 pretty easily after removing the levelwind parts. It will go over 50 with the levelwind but not much over 20 yards more.

Can someone help me?

I just bought this reel. My first baitcast, so trouble was to be expected. I'm trying to learn how to tune it into the weight of my sinker/bait. I'm having problems with backlashing before it even hits the water. What kind of casting distance should I be able to get out of this reel? Any help would be much appreciated.
