The Katadyn® Vario Microfilter is the only premium microfilter adjustable for different water conditions. Removes waterborne bacteria and cysts, producing fresh tasting waster. A simple turn engages a ceramic pre-filter for longer filter life in dirty water, or you can use the ''faster flow'' mode to utilize the pleated glassfiber filter under normal conditions. The Vario Microfilter from Katadyn is compatible with most standard outdoor bottles and hydration bladders. Weight: 15 oz. Dimensions: 7.5'' x 4''.

Rated 4 out of 5 by YolloBolly from Long term report. I have been using my Vario for 10 years of backpacking/hunting and am very happy with it. I've never been sick from the water I processed through it even when drawing from springs and creeks that livestock have used. The paper filter is expensive but it can be made to last a long time by never bypassing the Ceramic filter. People mention that the pump will leak around the head but this is just a sigh that the ceramic filter is plugged and needs to be cleaned with the supplied pad. It's easy to do in the field. Pumping with a clogged ceramic filter causes a pressure build up in the pump and that is what eventually lead to the demise of my Vario. The pump head broke around the thread lugs that hold the works together. I couldn't find a replacement part available. This is the only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five.

It look like a very poor design. It is just glued and if one caries this in a backpack, it will be just a matter of time for it to break off. I am returning it and purchasing replacement filter for my existing hiker pump

You must clean the ceramic filterer often when this option is used though. It's great for large volume water needs. Very fast water recovery.

It's a great, compact, light weight filter that gets everything out of the water. Fills 6 peoples water supplies quickly and easily. The cartridge replacements are a little pricey but for as long as they last, worth the money. The only problem I've ever had, it does seem to clog fairly quickly when exposed to the Red Algae in the water. This is common in Utah and the filters have to be replaced fairly regularly. I have not seen any other filter that deals well with this either though. I rate this 5 out 5 for what it does, the size and weight and great for backpackers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by PishDog from Crystal clear! I've had this pump for several years now. I've been to very remote areas of northern Quebec, northern BC and several locations in Alaska plus the PCT. Yes it is heavy but what a dream machine workhorse. That's why I continue to buy these filters. They are simply the perfect match for this pump. Don't forget the ceramic filter! I always use the longer life setting. You get better filtration and it only takes a little longer. But this setup will fill your one quart Nalgene bottle in under two minutes. Love it!

Part of my gear was this Katadyn Water filter. I didn't pack a single ounce of water. I set up a camp and used this little filter daily. It is an amazing piece of camping gear. It was lightweight, easy to use and filled my camelback with little effort. The water tasted great. I am sure glad I bought this filter instead of others. I love it and would recommend it to any hunter, camper or fisherman.

Trying to put together a small emergeny kit & wanted something to have a safe supply of water. Live very near the Maumee river/ Lake Erie. & I don't want to store bottled h2o/

No. Only desalination will make salt water drinkable. Such a device in a portable package will cost about $1000.
