Flashers

Flashers are the most popular "fishfinder" for ice fishing. They have a circular display to show you what is below you in real time. You read it like a clock with "12:00" being 0 feet and the bottom is the first strong signal clockwise around the screen. Depth ranges on the unit tell you what the depth is. Any fish or your lure will show up between the 12:00 mark and that strong bottom signal. If you can see fish on a flasher screen but aren't catching, you may want to change your bait or presentation. If you haven't seen any fish, it may be time to move. A flasher's quick response, accuracy in any water quality or depth, and extraordinary target separation make it ideal to use for ice fishing in any body of water.

Sonar

Sonars are portable electronic units with LCD screens that use sound frequencies to determine water depth, bottom composition and fish in different columns of water. They also notify you when there is a movement in the area. In comparison to a flasher, sonars are able to provide more information about what's going on below the ice. Most sonar units designed for ice-fishing will have a flasher mode that shows a real-time view, while also providing historical data of previous movements. The benefit of a sonar unit is that it can be used all-year round with the proper accessories.

Underwater Cameras

Ice-fishing cameras let you watch the action below you so you can actually see the strike as it happens. The camera is lowered into the water, giving you a horizontal view of the action and allowing you to see multiple lures and fish at the same time. The better the water clarity, the greater the distance that can be viewed. Anglers will often drill a second hole for their camera so they can get a better view of their lure and prevent tangles. The back of the camera can also be hooked to the camera cord so that it points the camera downward and shows a top view of your lure and fish along with bottom structure.
