Hornady RAPiD Vehicle Gun Safe
The Hornady® RAPiD® Vehicle Gun Safe conveniently stores your self-defense handgun in most any vehicle, where it's ready to deploy at a moment's notice. Multiple touch-free access options allow you to open the handgun safe with a RFID bracelet, RFID stickers, RFID key fob; or you can open the safe using a 4 to 6-digit security code on the keypad. The provided barrel keys provide an optional method of entry. A spring-assisted lid opens instantly to expose most any 1911-size pistol or 4" barreled revolver. The RAPiD Vehicle Safe features an inflatable bladder mounting system that conforms to fit securely inside your vehicle without requiring any vehicle modifications. The included 12-volt vehicle adapter powers the safe off the vehicle's battery; or you can use four AAA batteries (not included). The exterior of the gun safe is made of 14-gauge steel with 2 internal hardened locking lugs. The safe exceeds ASTM international safety standards for child and pry resistance; lock strength; drop, pick and saw tests; and high-attack resistance. Doesn't fit Jeep WranglerVery disappointed to discover this won't fit as designed in my 2014 Jeep Wrangler. Ended up bolting it on an angle to the center console.

Not up to security expectationsI was pleased with the safe construction and the RFID access capability, but the security cable portion of the design leaves much to be desired. The security cable is attached to the outside of the safe with a Philips head screw through a plastic part of the bladder interface. No bolt cutters required, just a screwdriver and you can walk away with the safe and open it at your leisure. This is unacceptable to me. The cheapest key operated safe boxes at least have the cable penetrate the safe so it has to be opened to get the safe off the cable. I will end up cutting a hole into the safe to do this.
I would not have purchased this if I understood this part of the design.

Better than the alternativeI give it 4 stars because it solves a problem. I frequently have a gun or other valuables (including keys) that I want to leave in my truck, Ford F-150, rather than carry them with me. Usually that means I put them under the seat where they are accessible to anyone who breaks in. The rapid safe provides significantly improved security. However it is not perfect. For my truck, the mounting plate should be 5 inches longer. The safe has to be mounted far enough forward so that it will open easily without hitting the seat. At this position, the mounting plate does not get a good grip resulting in two negatives. One, the safe, slips downward and secondly, it falls away from the center console so that it rubs on my leg. The same would happen if mounted on the other side. I would have returned the safe had I not solved those two problems with velcro. The velcro does an excellent job in holding the safe in place, so far.
