DogBone Shed Antler Retrieving System
The DogBone Shed Antler Retrieving System is a proven 3-step process to train your dog to find shed antlers. It is designed to allow its users to effectively cross-train previously trained retrievers and sporting dogs or young pups to hunt for and retrieve shed antlers. The DogBone dummies are made of the same material as other familiar training dummies, enabling an easy transition in training to an object of a new shape with a familiar feel. The antler dummies are not only effective transition training tools, but also serve as a means to provide a safe, positive and pleasant introduction to the antler shape for pups and young dogs with sensitive smaller muzzles, eyes and noses, thereby eliminating the risk of your dog becoming shed shy. With the use of a few basic training methods and the proper tools, most dogs can be effectively trained to find sheds, increasing your odds of success exponentially. With the help of your dog, you can cover more ground and find more sheds. The Shed Antler Retrieving System includes antler dummy, training booklet and two ounces of antler scent. Manufacturer model #: DB RK.

Excellent resultsWe have had great success with this system. Our dog is a 19 month old lab/german shepherd mix. It took only a few times throwing then hiding when she could see before she was able to find the training dummy when hidden when she could not see. We did not use it indoors at all. Initially we used very little scent. Before hiding when the dog could not see we dipped each tine in the scent about 3/8 to ½ inch and let it air dry. We could see when she picked up the scent on the wind and would go almost directly to the dummy even if it was hidden under leaves. The soft material appears to be a must. The dog was shy of the tines at first and had a chance to figure out how to pick up the dummy without getting poked. Today was her first test in the woods and it worked as well as in and on the wooded edges of our yard. We did use treats as a reward for finding and bringing the dummy. Each time at the beginning and now about every second or third time. Today was day 3 of her training. Based upon our experience I would highly recommend this product. The booklet was OK but contained nothing I could not find online or would not be basic training techniques for a dog to learn any new command or task.

Response to the 1 star below.I do agree, that the fake antler could be a bit tougher, it does get chewed up rather quickly.
So I advise not letting the dog just chew on it, but instead using this as a scent training tool to help the dog locate real antlers on hikes.
Here's what I do...
--I drop the scent on this toy, and with the rope drag it along a short trail and hide it somewhere.
--I then take my pup and dogs to near the beginning of the scent trail so they can pick it up.
--I then follow close behind the dog / pup as they follow the scent trail, watching closely and encouraging them to find the antler.
--Once the pup/dog finds the antler, I encourage them to pick it up and give it to me in exchange for treats and lots of love and praise.
If used right, you can even just keep using this as a game to play with your buddy. They LOVE the mental exercise just as much as physical.
It's great fun for both of you. ^_^

not pleased at alli ordered this kit to start training my 3 month old chocolate lab, it came in the mail today and I had it open within 30 seconds. I gave the antler a toss and within the first retrieval my pup had the tip of the G2 and G3 bitten all but completely threw the tips. id say with a good week or two of training the fake antler will no longer be usable

first findI got this for our new puppy Savage our Yellow lab. He likes it but he also like the real antler I have for him that we play fetch with in the morning when I get home. After about 3 days of using this Savage made his first find of a nice 3 point blacktail behind our house. He was 4 months at the time of his find.

So far it works great!I have been working with the dog for about a month now and I can hide it anywhere (mostly inside) and she will find it and bring it right to me. If we didn't have 4ft of snow I would test her on the real thing but haven't yet.

A must have for shed dog trainingIt's simple. Leave a bad impression to a puppy and things won't be the same. This somewhat soft and slightly pliable synthetic antler is the perfect go between to transition a dog in training to the actual hard-horned real thing. As fantastic of a product as this is, the creator is equally as impressive. He's very reachable and we've spoke on training several times. Just an all around great product and great guy.
