Great but....These Accudepth Daiwa 17 and 27 reels basically "kinda" great but you need put another spool bearing on the right side of spool that only comes with a plastic cheap bushing, which is easily replaced with a 6x13x3.5mm ball bearing for inexpensive dollars. ...the drag washers are cheapo greased cardboard garbage but you can replace them with Carbontex drag washers LIGHTLY Greased WITH synthetic grease...other than those 2 upgrade options, this reel is pretty well bulletproof. I might add you can upgrade the handle to a power handle and that is good too for those guys who don't like paddle handles.

Great ReelWe bought six of these reels 7 years ago. Never had a problem. We fish Saginaw Bay at least once a week and these should last another 7 seven years with very little maintenance.

Bad experienceI am returning this reel because it has had problems ever since I first put it on a Rod. The first problem was that it wouldn’t cast smooth it would catch like there was a lot of tension on the spool. It wouldn’t release line without a lot of tension even with the spool tension knob as loose as possible. I took off all of the line and the bare spool still acted like it had heavy tension on it when it was released. I tried Mono, braid and Dacron line and had the same problem with all types of line. That was the first problem but I tried working through it since it was mainly for bottom fishing and didn’t need to cast long distances. Then a worse problem occurred that caused fish to be lost. When fighting large sturgeon I gain on the fish and reel in several turns of the crank, then the fish takes off and the reel spins the crank backwards unwinding the line I just reeled like it slips and doesn’t lock in place when cranked. This happened on multiple 100-500 lb sturgeon and that was the end of it. I am going to stay away from this companies reels after this experience.

Spare reelsWe bought these cause the price was so good. The ones we have in boat for trolling are great. We put wire on them as it cuts through the water better and gives us about a 45 degree angle so we can estimate how deep we are. We really like them.

Good ValueThe line counter works well, the drag is smooth and the price is nice. For me a smooth reliable drag is a must. The line counter is a must when fishing in a crowd.

Excellent linecounterI have 4 of these and they are fine linecounters for the past 3 years. Only drawback is the counter reset button is next to the bail lever,sticks way out, and easily gets reset with an accidental bump... A good bang for the buck. No other issues to report.

Kokanee fishingI have been using this reel for many years for kokanee fishing. I have one that is at least 12 years old. I have 8 rods I use for kokanee tournaments and have one of these reels on all of them. Have never had a problem with any of them.

wish you carried more kokanee related items.
I was wondering if theses reels would hold up to salmon, and steelhead. I would mainly be using this for walleye in saginaw bay. Just curious if I decided to try for bigger species from time to time.

Can this reel be used for jigging?

Thank you for contacting Bass Pro Shops. The Daiwa AccuDepth Plus B/BW Line Counter Reel is designed more for trolling. This reel can be used for jigging but with the high line recovery per turn it would cover a lot of the water column quickly which is not ideal for jig fishing.

Line counter reel calibration
I have seen alot of info online about line counter reels needing to be calibrated. Do these need in fact to be calibrated? Another question if for example I put 300 yards and reel is calibrated then I lose 100 yards of line for what ever reason is this reel still calibrated?

In order to be effective trollers, and eliminate the potential for errors, I'd like to share a method that I use to get all of my counter reels "dead on". I'll walk you through a calibration session for putting on Fireline with a monofilament backing as an example. When we are done with this calibration, we'll know exactly how much line has to be put on the reel.
The only equipment required to calibrate the reel will be; two counter reels that are the same model and an inexpensive in-line counter.
Set this reel up to have 300 feet of 10# Fireline backed by 10# monofilament. I will be using the inexpensive mono backing to calibrate the reel. The only equipment I'll need to do this will be; two counter reels that are the same model and an inexpensive in-line counter.
Here's the process:
1. Tie the Fireline onto reel #1 and hook up the in-line counter.
2. Reel in the Fireline until the in-line counter measures 300 feet.
3. Tie the monofilament onto the end of the fireline.
4. Zero the in-line counter.
5. Reel in the mono until the spool looks like it's a little less than "full", and take note of the reading on the in-line counter.
6. Zero the reel.
7. Reel in more line until the in-line counter says you've added another 50 feet. How many feet does your reel say you've reeled in? If it says you've reeled more than 50 feet, you need to add more line.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until the reel matches the in-line counter. Once the inline counter matches the reel, you've calibrated your reel.
9 Make sure to write down how much monofilament the in-line counter says you've put on. You'll use this number in the future.
10. Tie the end of the mono that's on reel #1 to the spool of reel #2, and transfer all of the line. Now, the mono is on the bottom, and the Fireline is on top...Reel #2 is ready to go.
You will never need to do this calibration again unless you change the reel model, or line diameters. For all subsequent reels, simply tie the mono on first, and set up the in-line counter...Put on as much line as you noted during the calibration process (step 9), and do the same with the Fireline.
Obviously, when you let line out while fishing, the spool diameter will decrease, and your reel will begin to slightly overestimate the amount line that's let out. However, this is not much of a problem in most cases.
