Description
Browning SA-22 Grade I Semi-Auto Rimfire Rifle
One of John M. Browning's last designs, the Browning SA-22 Semi-Auto Rimfire Rifle has stood the test of time, providing shooters with a slim, lightweight, ultra-reliable, takedown .22 rifle with extremely innovative features. The SA-22's receiver is machined from solid steel, and ejects cases out the bottom making it naturally ambidextrous. The receiver on the Grade I model is scroll engraved and has a high polished blued finish. The barrel also has a high polished blued finish, comes with a folding rear sight and a brass bead front sight, and is drilled and tapped for scope mounts. A gloss finished, checked walnut stock and forearm accentuates the SA-22's fine lines, while bringing out the beauty of the walnut and protecting it from the elements. The Browning SA-22 Semi-Auto Rimfire Rifle breaks down just in front of the receiver without tools by turning a knurled barrel nut for convenient transport and storage. Once the barrel is removed, the trigger assembly can be slid out for cleaning and lubrication. The tubular magazine is loaded through a port in the side of the stock, and unloaded by removing the follower tube from the buttstock. This is a high-grade .22 rifle for serious small game hunting, as well as training and plinking, and because of its innovative takedown design it also doubles as a survival rifle that's easy to take anywhere.

Family memberI bought this gun back in 1978. I saved up my summer money to buy it. I started coon hunting with it. After about 40 years it still looks good. It always brings back memories. It is part of the family. It will be passed down to one of my grandkids. My brother had one, and a neighbor wanted to borrow it. I told him, it's like you're wanting to borrow a family member. Wasn't happening. I paid$192 for it. It's the sweetest little gun.

Lasts and lastsI bought a SA 22 about 40 years ago at an absurdly low price and it has been my favorite rifle. It is light, accurate, takes down easily and is simply beautiful. In the 40 years I have owned it I NEVER had a misfire. The downward ejection makes it easy to use for left handed shooters. John Bowning's ghost should be complimented on it's design.

This is worth every penny above a basic .22!!I have owned other .22s and I own two of these Browning SA 22's. There is no comparison between the cheepos vs a Browning!! The way I see it, you pay twice as much for this gun, but if you take care of it, it will last much more than twice as long, AND you enjoy a quality piece of art during that time. Not to mention that these really don't depreciate in value much. A used Browning SA 22 seems to hold its value really well if it is taken care of, while Rugers (nothing wrong with them) are a dime a dozen.
If you were lucky enough to own one made in belgium (pre 1980s I think) they only go up in value!
All that aside, they are the most fun, accurate, reliable 22 I've ever shot!!
If you want one that you can change out a magazine real fast and attach a bunch of aftermarket parts to it, this is probably not the gun for you. But if you have an appreciation for quality, design, and like to shoot with pieces of art, THIS is the gun for you. This is the type of gun that you can shoot, your kids after you, and then you can teach your grandkids on the same gun you used.

Bad finish? Dings on stock? 2 guns 2 fails.I bought this gun new at Cabela's-(internet purchase) along with a new Browning BL-22. The SA was missing a spot of finish on the stock and the BL had 3 large dings in the stock. Both had to be sent back to Browning-(I left the store empty handed), not sure when I will see my rifles. I suspect they might have been damaged display models sent back to the warehouse to be sent out for internet purchases? I wanted to take them shooting with my kids on my day off work-(Good Friday), but that didn't work out. Very bad experience!

Old MemoriesMy uncle had one of these when I was a boy, his was made in Belgium and it was the only .22 rifle he ever used. That rifle was passed to his son when he passed away after using it for 45-50 years. I went on many squirrel hunts with him and always longed for that little rifle as I thought it was the best .22 ever made. I got to shoot it now and then and it had a distinct sound that you could tell from other .22's and it was the most accurate easiest to carry, and point of any rifle I ever carried to this day. I finally bought myself one a few years ago only this one is made in Japan. It can be a little picky on ammo as it doesn't care much for the hotter loads and it doesn't like hollow points either. I still wouldn't trade it for one of every other .22 made combined. It's still the most accurate, sweetest little rifle ever made and someday my son will own it and I hope feel the same. I own many high end firearms and have been collecting them for many years but none will ever make me feel the way this little Browning does. It's perfect and the memories it brings back of that long ago time are priceless.

Recently PurchasedRecently purchased at BPS in Memphis (pyramid location). Shout out to Scott for his assistance and great customer service! I have not fired the gun at this time but I can attest to the quality/craftsmanship of this rifle. Beautiful wood and blueing. I have several .22 rifles and was looking for a quality rifle that I would enjoy shooting and hunting. I selected this rifle due to the quality, the classic good looks, a design by John M Browning, and the fact that is has survived over 100 years. In addition I agree with others on the how the rifle naturally points. All the research resulted in positive feedback as well. I gave it 4 (vs 5 stars) simply because I have not shot and therefore cannot attest to the rifle's performance as of this writing.
