Poor Quality Even For Beginning BaitcasterI bought this product several months ago for my first baitcaster. I would strongly advise again this one. The rod literally snapped while I was fishing and the reel is not much better- can grind a lot and does not have great cast distance. There are plenty of other inexpensive baitcaster opinions that are much higher quality than this one.

Great rod but horrible reelI got this combo around the time of fall and at first it was great but than it began to butterfly and knot up. ive spent more time fixing the reel than fishing. The rod is great for the price but the reel absolutley sucks.

Get something elseI bought this a few days ago and the cork wrap on the rod started to come off and the reel has backlash no matter what line or lure I use. I have other bait casters and have been using them for years so its not like I do not know how to cast with them. No matter what I did I could not get it to work. I returned it and bought something else that was much better.

Not HappyI got this combo in the 7ft M last year for my birthday. The rod has performed great, it is still going strong. I've even caught a 7.05lb bass on it. The reel is the total opposite. It started grinding and got really rough about 5 months after I got it. I do fish a lot, normally more than once a week, but I still take care of my equipment. I sold it and picked up a Pro Qualifier during the Spring Classic last year for half off, one of the best buys ever.

Good valueI have owned this combo for about 6 months and have enjoyed using it. It performs well and given the price is a good option for those beginning on baitcast setups. It is not as smooth as some of the higher priced options, but it gets the job done.
Wife bought me this last Christmas, used it once makes a grinding noise can't get it to stop ..would like to use it

Thank you for choosing Bass Pro Shops. Browning Fishing brand rods and reels are warranted for 1 year from the date of purchase against defects in materials, workmanship, and against breakage under normal fishing conditions, to the original purchaser. This warranty is void if the rod or reel is in an abused or misused condition and does not cover "normal wear and tear." A dated sales receipt is required for warranty validation.

Having problems with backlash but I put 8lb line on it would that be my problem
Asked by: Rob73
What is a backlash?
When the thumb tab is pushed on a baitcaster, it causes the spool to go into a free spin mode. This, in turn, enables you to cast the lure and when it hits the water surface, the lure starts operating slowly whereas the spool stays as it is.
As a result, the line has practically nowhere to go and it leads to a tangled mess of fishing lines. This is what we call a backlash. It is likewise known as birds nest since it closely resembles the nest of a bird.
Heavy lures are suitable for the baitcasting reels to work with. It will be advisable to go for a heavy lure, for example, a big crankbait or a massive swimbait, when you are commencing to use a baitcaster.
Tighten Down On Your Spool Tension
In case you have the spool tension (which is closely linked to the braking system) too high or too low, the end result will be a backlash. Ensure that the spool tension is set correctly prior to casting. Also, the tension must be appropriate which will make the lure fall down at medium or slow speed. It is undesirable to allow the lure to fall too fast or too slow.
Once you get into the water, make it a point to cast your reel. Otherwise, you might end up being upset. It will be a smart idea to start practicing regularly in your backyard since it might give you more control in the long run.
8lbs test line would be ok to use for this reel. make sure that your braking system and spool tension knob are set accordingly. If your reel is able to spin freely, more line can come off than needed. Be sure to check that your reel is properly tuned before every fishing trip.

You the rod hold up to a pike, or do I need to go bigger. I have never fished pike and would love to try, but I need a reliable rod and reel. Would this rod and reel do the job.
Asked by: Alex Campbell
Thank you for your question. This rod/reel combo would work well for Northern Pike under normal circumstances.
