Try before you buyI purchased this reel on the recommendation of a Cabela’s sales associate. The reel comes in a sealed package so I was not able to try it out before purchasing. After the purchase I took the reel out of the packaging to have Cabela’s spool the reel with new line. While waiting my turn I took the time to try out the reel. I was very disappointed to find that the bail would hang up in certain positions after I flipped it open. In other words, after opening the bail (as to make a cast) it would not close as it should by turning the handle and had to be closed by hand. Needless to say, I returned it before I left the store.

review for Silver Max 5Bought this reel at my local BPS beginning of 2018.
Out of the box, this has to be the worst reel I've ever owned, spinning or baitcaster.
Turning the handle for the first time produced a shh, shh ,shh sound. Flipped the reel over and tried again. Noticed the rotor was wobbling so much it was hitting the reel body. Should have returned it right then. But, not my style. Loosened the rotor and tightened the nut with the rotor fairly straight. Much better. However after about an hour of use, turning the handle became harder, almost like a bearing was having trouble turning. (This was the chronic problem that got this reel the lowest rating.) But, taking the reel apart and putting some oil on the bearings helped. Temporarily.
Finally was fed up enough with this reel that I purchased an Abu Garcia Black Max. Advertised with less bearings but smoother than the Silver Max ever was. Anyway, noticed from the parts list for each reel that most, if not all, the internals were exactly the same. So, I tore down both reels and moved all the internals (minus the bearings on the drive gear) from the Black Max to the Silver Max. Not sure what fixed the problem, but the Silver Max feels as smooth as butter. After 3 hours of use, it still feels great. (The Black Max with the Silver Max internals also feels great.)
Couple of comments:
1) I've owned 7 or 8 spinning reels in my 30+ years of fishing. I've NEVER seen a rotor fit so poorly/loose like this one. Even the cheaper Black Max rotor fit better.
2) The Silver Max is advertised as having 6 bearings, while the Black Max is advertised as having 4 bearings, with the line roller counting as one on each reel. After tearing apart both reels, I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THE 2 EXTRA BEARINGS ARE ON THE SILVER MAX. BOTH REELS LOOKED EXACTLY THE SAME TO ME. I would very much like to know what Abu Garcia is counting as bearings in the Silver Max.
Final thought:
After completely rebuilding both reels, after just a few hours of use, I'm very happy with this reel. THIS IS HOW I EXPECTED THE REEL TO FEEL RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. WISH IT DID. I WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT 5 STARS.

Good Quality ReelI bought this about a month ago along with a 7' rod. This combo 'reely' works well. The reel works and cast very smoothly. I would buy this item again!
This reel will work on a 10' rod depending on the specific power and action of that rod. This is not a heavy reel. Thank you for asking.

These Abu Garcia reels are sized by 5, 10, 20, 30 etc. You can review the difference in specifications in the chart below the description. Thank you for asking.

Would the 5:2:1 reel be good for an ultra light set up? I have a 7’6” Daiwa Presso and it is ultra light. Would this be a good reel?
