Humminbird 688ci HD DI Combo
sweet little unit
The 688 DI is a great little unit. I have a 900 series at the console of my boat and I wanted another down imaging unit at my trolling motor. You cant beat this fishfinder for the money. It does everything I hoped it would and more. Once I find a spot I want to fish with my other unit I hop to the bow and start using my trolling motor. I love not having to run back to my console to mark waypoints anymore. DI is very good on this unit as is the gps. If you want a great fishfinder without breaking the bank this is what you need. If you want side imaging you can get that for just 200 more dollars. I really like the price points of the 2014 humminbirds too.

DO NOT BUY! Keep Looking!
Nothing but issues, frustration, and hassles! GPS WON'T stay locked on. Called Humminbird numerous times and finally told to return head unit for replacement to BPS. Still will not stay locked on. Past the 60 day Bass Pro refund even though we just received the new head unit. Should have returned it, got a refund, and been done instead. Now, Humminbird wants pics of the unit to help determine the cause. Humminbird needs to find a solution NOW or gives us a refund. DO NOT BUY. DO NOT BUY. DO NOT BUY. DO NOT BUY. DO NOT BUY. Keep looking to save yourself all the issues, frustration, and hassles.

Excellent MidLevel Sonar/GPs
I've had no issues with this unit and very satisfied with the performance. This unit can be customized to suite each user preferences. The GPS gains lock in the same amount of time as my handheld and vehicle Garmin units when powering up "cold". The number of screen display choices and color is very good. The detail of structure is excellent in all modes. When purchasing a Navionics map card be sure to check compatibility of the different map packs available. The unit is voltage sensitive, will shutdown when voltage is low. I had this happen a few times with incandescent type anchor, bow nav & gauge lights were turned on, the system voltage would drop. I switched my bow nav & anchor lights to LED to reduce current draw and haven't had any issues since the change.

GPS issue still not fixed
I live in the Rocky Mountains and planned to use this unit for ice fishing. With the lakemaster maps/GPS I was hoping to use it to navigate to fishing points on some of the mountain lakes. Issue is the GPS has to be rock solid since your view of the sky may be limited.
After buying the unit I took it home and powered it up to check the GPS. Just sitting still while watching the map page it moved all over the place even with a 3D lock. After 30 minutes it had tracked over a 1/4 mile radius on the map even though I never moved. At one point (after being on 15 minutes) it indicated I was traveling 20+ MPH while it was sitting still. It would indicate messages saying lost GPS every 10-30 seconds.
I turned on my old Humminbird 597 and the GPS held satellites a lot better than the new Humminbird 688. From all the Humminbirds I own, all of them seem to have the issue where the position and speed fluctuate if you are not moving 1 MPH or greater.
I was hoping they resolved the poor GPS performance this year, but it doesn't look like it. For now I will continue using a handheld GPS for ice fishing.
