I believe it is for hanging on a nail or hook. That is what I use it for at least. I have a genuine G.I. issue machete from Ontario Co. and it is way heavier than the Gerber and has no hole. I would not expect the hole to be for aerodynamics or anything. Also I bought a corn knife a while back that has a similar hole on it and it was specifically used for hanging.

I am not positive about this answer but I think you could attach some paracord to the hole and two people could use the saw as a two man operation to cut wood faster than with one by adding pressure to the mix. Might not be it but I think it would help anyway.

the blade slides out and the know at the end is used to tighten the blade in place. No locking mechanism per se.

Sorry, I miss read the question. The hole is to hang it by a hook/nail in your workshop.
