Requires six alkaline "AA" size batteries (not included) for operation. Cannot hook up to a 12v boat battery. NOTE: Continuous backlight operation will significantly decrease the battery life for the Fishin´ Buddy.

The transducer points dow. Downlooking Sonar which sends sound waves from the bottom of the transducer into the water directly below the transducer.

Can this thing be used off shore in the ocean? Is it water proof? If it were to fall into the water and be completely submerged would it still function as though it never happened?

Yes, it is completely waterproof, although I wouldnt use it in strong currents, or deployed while in any sort of waves. Yes, it will still function as is if completely submerged in saltwater.
