It does but it takes a considerable amount of force. I would recommend doing it by hand.

The bail will flip closed when you turn the crank handle, however, as with all spinning reels it is better to close the bail manually as it is easier on the mechanism.

I don't want to buy a second reel as I just want an extra spool to carry in my tackle box for quick line changes for different types of fishing. Another reel this size will NOT fit in my tackle box.

A:
100lb mono is too much for the drag on this at 1/4 ratio. It will hold 300 yards of 100 pound braid but not mono.

A:
Spooling with 100 lb. mono would be a big mistake for any spinning reel as you won't be able to cast it very far. This reel holds 460 yards of 20 lb. mono and that should be good for just about any fish up to 100 lbs. Proper drag setting and skill are more important when playing a big fish than heavy test line. Using anything over 20 lb. test will kill casting distance. Combine this reel with the 12 ft. Daiwa Beefstick and the long rod will not only increase casting distance but also protect the line from breaking. It's just about impossible to break 20 lb. mono with a 12 foot rod as long rods are very forgiving when playing large fish.

A:
It will hold 240yds of 40lb, so it should hold about 100yds of 100lb mono. I think the reel will fail if you hook a fish that needs 100lb mono, but it will be a heck of a story to tell.

This particular size would not be good for using 100 lb mono. You would need a larger one than what I purchased.

Casting Capability

Details:
I am thinking of getting this reel for
surfcasting.
From my experience a spool made for
surfcasting is usually very long and with
a very shallow lip.
By just looking at it, its telling me it won't, because it has the exact opposite features.
I use 20lbs line for casting

I use it for surf and It works great but it won't outcast a fast conventional reel.

I have never been able to outcast it using my Regal Plus which uses a spool like the one you describe.

The spool holds about 460 yards of 20lb. mono. The spool has the largest diameter of any I've owned. Since the diameter is so wide , it doesn't have to be too long.

As long as you have a long rod, you will be fine. You may lose a little bit of distance, but its still very manageable.

Best option spray with wd40 or real magic etc to displace water wipe excess with paper towel etc.

This method won't hurt line any type and will prevent corrosion. Do not spray drag uncovered and do not spray with spool off.

A:
I usually clean all my surf fishing reels by removing the spool and rinsing with fresh water. Once a year, I will remove the side plate and apply fresh reel grease. A little WD-40 on the bail attach points is a good idea as well. WD-40 is fish oil based anyway, so maybe a little on the line wouldn't hurt!
