Yes, we have used them before in a corn field just to fill in the spread. You just have to try and set them up against a stalk of corn on a little dirt clump to get them to sit right, but it's easily done.

Yes they can be used in a field. The removable keels will allow them to sit flat on the ground.

They are a bit smaller, don't know the actual length, but I would say 2"-3" smaller if I had to guess.
