it has spinning guides but it is designed to go either way i have another rod of similar style and it works fine as a casting rod I recommend if u can check it out in person before u buy to check the size of the guides if they r too big it will not work as a casting

The Power Stick Series Surf rods 9' feet in length or greater are two piece rods with the ferrule dividing the rod into two equal halves. They are wrapped and epoxied at the ferrule for greater strength and durability. It is a common practice to tape a surf rod ferrule with electrical tape prior to casting to offset the tremendous torque that would otherwise cause ferrule separation and rod breakage.
