A:
For salmon, it all depends on the type of bugs/fish that it is feeding on at certain times of day. If they are feeding on small trout, buy the pattern that resembles small trout. If they are feeding on minnows, choose the pattern that looks the most like baitfish in your area. The color and size of baitfish changes lightly from lake-to-lake, so pick the one that resembles these closest to what are in your area. but like i said it all depends on what there feeding on at that time. one way to find out is to grab a small one and pump its stomache. it sounds crues, but it does no harm to the fish.

I have caught salmon on the Hot Head and pink colors of Rapala X-Raps. They seem to like the tail feather on the back hook a lot. I have a lot of different colors of X-Raps so what I did was put orange tail feather hooks on the X-Raps I use for salmon since spawn is orange. It works great in the Grand River, Muskegon River, and Manistee Rivers in Michigan.

How does the X-rap compare to the Bomber Pro Suspending Long A? I'm asking because the Long A is considerably cheaper ($3+ cheaper) and reviews are just as positive as reviews on the X-rap. Both of these plugs dive about the same depth but the 3 1/2 inch suspending Long A is an 1/8 oz heavier. Would the suspending Long A be a better search bait from shore? Which has better castability?

A:
I fish from the shore to, and i can tell you that they both cast just fine on small to medium sized ponds and lakes from the shore. the was that the X-RAP is designed is its bb's(what makes it rattle) are allowed to slide to the back of the bait, so therefore more casting distance per oz. If I were you, I would purchase them both and see what you think of either one. they are both excellent baits for searching, just don't rely on them to catch all of your fish on a trip. I can tell you that the X-RAP will get alot of follows, and as long as you can see those, after you find 'em take a zoom super fluke and move it really slow over the area in which you see the fish coming from, as long as its 10 ft. or less, and this should hopefully create a nice hard strike
Hope this helps

How do you repair this bait

Details:
i was fishing with it today, my second day using it, and it was sinking. i picked it up to notice that it was ready to break in half so i stopped using it. there is a large crack running almost all around it. i spent almost 10 dollars on it so i was wondering if there was a way to fix it. if you dont know how would you be able to tell me if bass pro will give me another or list a more durable bait. thank you!

A:
Well, i don't think that bass pro will give you a new one, but they might. It is a durable bait, so you probably casted it into something hard (such as a rock face) and that could easily crack it. try to cast it more along the shoreline instead of twords it.

Normally those X-Raps can handle a lot of stress unless they hit something really hard so it must have been a rare one that was weak for some reason. I do extremely well on both the freshwater X-Raps & saltwater X-Raps for largemouth, smallmouth, and pike in lakes & rivers in Michigan. Call Bass Pro and they are very nice about helping people. Saltwater X-Raps should be tougher and not seen by fish as often if you wanted to look them up and replace it with one of them, or get a regular X-Rap in your favorite color. I have about 40 X-Raps between fresh & saltwater in 4 sizes and 6 colors that work well anywhere I go fishing.

Ya a good bright color such as hot head is good for murky water. The action of this bait should catch the fish. But when in very muddy water you want a bright colored bait so the fish can locate it easier

The best way to fish an X-rap is with a jerk- stop retrieve, but a constant retrieve works too.

You can just recovery the line continuously or make some rod tip work, both ways are effective.

I like to twitch & retrieve (erratic movements are deadly) and
stop-n-go, but you can try your own. Basses are never the same.

I generall use a fairly light outfit fishing the tidal creeks here in Queensland. I have a 6.5 rod rated 6-14lb that i use with a Penn 3000 reel loaded with 8lb braid. I also use a 7' rod rated at 4-10lb with a Shimano 2500 size reel loaded with 6lb braid. If I'm fishing tight into structure I use 6' Penn tournament rod with a Daiwa Sol baitcaster loaded with 15lb braid. All these outfits are for fishing the X-rap 8.

Nothing works better than braid to give this bait extreme action. I use a fairly stiff graphite rod and a spinning reel spooled with 15 pound power pro. The braid and the stiff rod really make this lure dance.

Yes. I either cut them off or take the hook off and replace it. I may use the feathered hook on a different type of lure. Although, pike and bass may hit that, trout aren't fooled by it. There is no minnow out there swimming with feathers!

I like silver and silver blue for clear/shallow water. This is the most common conditions for my fishing environment.

Hot steel for murky water is my best choice.

I would have to say that hot steel is a good color for bass and pike. I have that color in the xr08 and it works fine. I fish it in a lake that is crystal clear and it has caught me many fish.
