What makes this boot snake proof?

The tough all-around exterior of the boot makes it hard for snakes to be able to sink their fangs through it and also the height of the boot protects your leg where most snake bites occur while walking through the woods. Hope this helps

Outside of boot is tough, but it is backed by a liner similar to a bullet proof vest on the back side.

I normally wear a 11.5 and sometimes even a 12 in normal footwear. I purchased these boots in a size 11 and they fit me perfectly. I figure they run a tad bit smaller than normal footwear. So u might want to try a 10. Hope this helps.
