Yes you do use the "metal top" or lid. Put the lid on, then the jar sealer over it onto the jar. Attached with the vac. tube to the vac. (I use the "canister" setting on my FoodSaver machine.) When the machine goes off. Remove the Jar Sealer from the jar. The remaining "lid" is sealed. The ring can go on afterward but do not cinch it tightly. Just "finger tight" will do.
