I'm not sure about the first guestion, but I can answer the second one. It probably wouldn't affect the performmance of the rod, but I wouldn't recomend doing that unless you have special tools and can do a very good job. Also, most muskie rods don't have an exposed blank near the trigger for two reasons. The first is that when fishing with large muskie baits, it really wouldn't do much for the sensitivity and the second reason is that most muskie fisherman hold the rod by the foregrip. Even if you prefer holding the rod by the handle, when throwing muskie lures, you will probably end up using the foregrip anyway since it is much less tiring with huge lures. Anyway, it wouldn't change the rods performance to carve into the handle, but I wouldn't recomend it. Hope thie was helpful.
