Where is it 5X on the leader, at the beginning or at the end? Also if I have 5X line can I use leaders that are 6X or 4X too?

A tapered leader is quite heavy at the end that attaches to the fly line. It then tapers to whatever size you have - in your case 5X which is the finest part of the line and where you tie on the fly. Most flyfishers will tie on a piece of "tippet" material that is even smaller in diameter. Lefty Kreh once stated that 5X is about as small as you need for most trout fishing. It is your presentation that matters the most. Depending on the length of your leader, I would clip back a 5X leader and then tie on a 2 foot length of 5X tippet to fish smaller flies. A 6X leader is for use with very tiny flies and should probably be used only by very experienced flyfishers. It is very easy to break off a fish when using such light lines (most 6X is 2-3 lb.test or less if not new). I like a 4X leader and use mostly 9 foot or occasionally a 12 foot length to start - then add tippet with a blood knot.

The 5x written on the package of your leader referrs to the diameter at the tip of the leader. 5x = .006" diameter in "fly fishing lingo".If you have a 5wt fly line you can use leaders with a tip (tippet) diameter of almost any size -- although the most popular fly fishing sizes are 0x (.011") - 7x (.004").
The "X" system designed by fly fishers allows the user to quickly know what the best size leader is to use with a certain fly. Fly fisherman typically take the hook size of the fly they are using (say size 12) and divide the number by 3. So a 4x leader would be a good match for this fly for example. It is just a guide to help the angler choose the appropriate size leader, etc.

I have used braided loops on the end of my fly lines for many years. They are available in most fly shops. There are 2 sizes that I know of - one for line sizes up to 5 or 6 and loops designed for 7-10 wt lines (or perhaps larger). If you use these loops just be sure to super glue it after putting it on your line. Twice (years ago) the entire leader has come off with a fish on when the loop pulled loose. It is supposed to tighten when you pull on the line, but when the line gets cold (in a trout stream) it gets less flexible and will not grab as tightly. Just dab some glue on the point where the fly line ends inside the braided loop material.A:
This is a topic of debate among fly fishermen. Some prefer to connect the leader to the line via a nail knot or albright knot. Since the advent of the welded loop on many of today's modern fly lines it is advantageous to connect the leader to these loops using a loop-to-loop connection. Most fly fishermen who use such a connection prefer a Perfection Loop although some prefer a Double Surgeons loop since it is easier to tie.A:
If your flyline does not have a loop end welded into it, you can use Braided Fly Fishing Line to Leader Loop Connectors, which slip over your fly line to create a connecting loop, and attach with an include heat shrink tubing. Becareful when heating the tubing, as too much heat, will completely melt your line & connector.A:

Commercially made leaders range in size from as short as 6' to as long as 18'. Generally speaking use 6' leaders only with sinking or sink tip lines, 7 1/2' leaders for bass bugs or small streams, 9' for all conditions, and 12' or longer for fishing small flies to extremely spooky fish. If in doubt, buy a 9' leader per it is an excellent all-around, all-purpose length.A:
The length of your leader really depends on your fishing situation. When fly fishing, most leaders range anywhere from 6' to over 12'. I perfer a 7 1/2' or 9' depending on the situation I'm fishing.

the general rule is around the length the rod that you will be using, however you vary the lenght of leaders depending on the type of fishing your doing . if your fishing heavy bass flies and want them on the bottom then a shorter leader will work better in contrast if your stalking skittish native trout then you may need to go out byeond 12 feet and basically use tippit for most of the leader . just like every thing in fishing you must make adaptations to each situation that presents itself. that is also the logic that has me carrying around a small sproting goods store everywhere i gotight lines

The "X" refers to the diameter of the tippet. Not all leader material will have the same strength, but all leaders of the same X number will have the same diameter at the tippet.A:
The "X" stands for the strength of the line. I can't remember exactly, but I think it's an average of about the following: 3X - 7-8lb test, 4X - 6lb test, 5X - 4-4.5 lb test, 6X - 3-3.5 lb test, and 7X is about 2lb test. It just depends on how small the flies are you are using and how selective the fish you are targeting are that determines what you would use. For most trout fishing, I use 4 or 5X leader. Sometimes getting to a 7X if fishing a very small 22-26 fly.Answers

Personally, I like to change leaders when I've lost the extremely fine tapered end. Basically, as soon as it becomes difficult to threat a #26 hook is when I change leaders.A:
The end 20% of a leader is your tippet(the part that is the lb. test) If you add 14 to 18 inches of tippet to a new leader you can tie on a dozen or so flys b4 it gets close to the knot.When it does cut off knot and add another piece of tippet etc.Should be able to use for hundred flys or so till you get out of the tippet end.You can also buy a one size heaver leader and use smaller tippet (such as a 5lb leader with eithr a 5lb or 3lb tippet) this gives you the choice of changing size of tippet w/out changing leaders.

I inspect my leaders after every fishing trip, and only replace them if they have abrasions or cuts on them, so they don't break on my next trip

A good rule, though sometimes a little expensive, and what I go by, is I check my leaders after every trip, making sure there are no abrasions, nicks or cuts in it so that it doesn't break on the next fish.1 of 1
