Hello, In October my pops and I are going hunting in Oregon (Applegate) to be exact. However we are going blind folded we've never been,we don't know of any spots,I heard there is a fair amount of public land for hunting. However my question is would this product (Garmin® MapSource™ Topo US 2008 DVD-ROM for GPS and PC) be useful for me? As far as locating hunting grounds out of state. If not maybe you can guide me in the right direction.
Thank You

The program does identify public land, but, you will have to find out what is open for hunting or other public use. The state fish and game , wildlife management or whatever will have that info on a web site in most cases.

The Garmin MapSource is useful if you have a Garmin GPS. It will allow you to download the topo maps to the GPS for whatever area you are in up to the available memory on the GPS.

If you want to scout land without actually seeing the land I would suggest the following.
1 - Check the internet for maps of public land supplied by the state.
2 - Check out online topo sites like mytopo.com and if you want to order topo maps of the area you are going to hunt.
3 - Call up the state's DNR and ask them questions about hunting and public land access. They manage the area and can give you a leg up in contacting helpful land owners or specific areas to hunt.
4 - If the public land is managed by the US forest service or BLM given them a call and see what they can tell you.

Whenever I've called the government about help in pre-scouting land before I arrive they have always been very helpful in giving me contacts and pieces of information to make my time more useful.

Just remember nothing replaces on the ground scouting but preparation neve hurts.
