my husbnd wears a 38 but moves the button over for more room , we ordered a 40 in the shorts and he said it's perfect , he also wears a belt. I'D GET A 42 AND SEE HOW IT FITS , RETURNING OR EXCHANGING IS HASSEL FREE.

The size XL will fit a 40" to 42" waist. The 2X is for 44" to 46".
