The shanks aren't very long at all. I normally use them on 4" Power Worms or Power Craws. I prefer the 1/8 oz Darter Heads. The hooks are really sharp which is what I like about them. For a little deeper fishing I use the 1/4 oz Darter Heads and I like twitching the soft baits just on top of the weeds or through laydowns or just on top of the rocks. Since you're from White Bear Lake (I was born and raised in Wisconsin), I imagine you fish for walleye, bass, maybe panfish, pike or even musky. These darter heads are good for walleye, bass, and panfish. Sometimes the bass or panfish will hit short when using worms or craws, but the walleye usually gobbles the whole thing. I don't think I'd use these darter heads on anything longer than 6", but this is just my opinion and you can take that for what it's worth.
