When baitcasting I tend to use a modified baseball swing. I found this gets me the best distance and best control.

I recently bought this reel as a "combo" package. My first baitcaster. What simple maintenance tips are there?

Will a squirt of WD40 now and again do any harm?

Your better to use a specific reel lube or line conditioner. Than WD40

A:
i would not use wd 40 because it will get on the line and cost you bites because the bass will smell it. the reel does not need it as all the parts are inside. i use just a touch of hot sauce lube on the worm gear and the hanle bearings. it also helps if you replace the spool bearings with abec 7's but that is not necessary. bob r

The rod depends on what type of lures you will use. I have my ceanan paired with a 7'3" Abu Garcia rod.

One word : SHIMANO! I have purchased a few Quantum reels and have never been satisfied, except for the Energy PT series, which were $180+. @ $90 the Shimano Caenan looks to be a solid baitcaster for a beginner and I like the brake system on Shimano reels over anyone!

Bottom line, I'd pick the Quantum. But for your first, I would recommend other BPS reels that are better for still a low price.

Casting?

Does this reel cast like the Curado and the Citica? or do you have to hold the thumb bar down?

A:
I use the reel for bay fishing and it casts very far using popping corks. I also used it bass fishing and with a 1/4 ounce rooster tail and it cast that very far too. You just have to set the spool tension to the right level......when you push down the black button to cast, put the tip of your thumb down on the spool so you can lightly touch it to keep it from overspinning and control the distance. I hated bait casters til I got this one and it is really good. It took me about 1/2 day to get use to it. Highly recommend

Same concept as both other reels. I own all three reels mentioned, and the caenan holds it own quite well.

100% sure it's NOT aluminum.

Definitely graphite...hence the price point.

The caenan is fresh and salt water approved. As far as which is better, the code and kinetic can't compare in my book.

This reel has a graphite frame. If you want a Shimano with an aluminum frame, you have to step up to at least the Citica.
