The Bass Pro Shops Trolling Special Levelwind Reel is the perfect trolling reel. Designed to withstand the rigors of trolling, the round Trolling Special Levelwind Reel features a rugged, lightweight graphite frame and a machined, anodized aluminum spool for corrosion resistance, durability and easy handling. The reel's cast control knob applies continuous friction to the end of the spool shaft, assisting the centrifugal brake system in maintaining correct spool speed and preventing backlashes, while an audible bait clicker alerts you when a fish strikes and begins to pull line form the spool. When the alarm sounds, the Trolling Special's multi-disc drag system gives you the leverage to take the fight to the fish, with large drag discs providing the smooth flow of line at any setting.

I'm wondering what would be a good rod to compliment this reel for blue catfish, striped bass and walleye.

A:
you have to set the clutch tension so that the reel will just barely unroll with the weights attached (holding the rod parallel with the ground). This ensures the clutch is set to your weight.

Just remember, this is a Trolling Reel. I do cast with it, but it's not meant for long casting distances.

The most use I get from this reel, is simply dropping off the back of the boat while trolling, and using the clutch to feed line out. I've used planers and birds on this reel, and had a lot of success. I will pick up 2 more of these reels for my next trip to OBX.

You're using to big of a weight for this reel. I had the same problem when I did that. I just switched to a lighter weight and the problem went away.

Absolutely. I've used it for 2 seasons and it's still going strong.

I use planers and birds with this reel, and it performs flawlessly.

Once a fish is hooked while trolling, there's no need to slow the boat. This reel is like a winch. You just crank and it easily pulls in your fish.

This reel is not recommended for saltwater use. Since the reel is specifically made for freshwater fishing, the saltwater may dramatically reduce the life of the reel. Thank you!

A:
Certainly. It's sturdy enough to land a 7 foot, 140 pound spinner shark. Just make sure you clean it up real well after taking it out there.

If you look it is almost identical to the Offshore Angler GCL-30 with the exception of the fact that this reel only has two bearings.

Yes you can cast far with these reels. You have to have 2 oz of weight or more for it to cast decent. I am able to cast this at least 30 yards.

Yes, these reels cast well. I use 6oz of weight or more.

Your choice of rod will also affect the casting. But to answer your question, no they are NOT just for trolling.

Great for cat fishing and yes it can cast far. I am able to cast at least 30 yards. Just make sure you don't have anything over you or to your immediate left or right. takes practice to cast this reel.
