I guess that depends on how fast you are going when on plane. It works well for me up to about 15mph (13 knots.) faster than that and it gives a false reading. I think if you had a through hull transducer this might be different. I just have the factory transom mount that came with the unit (not the quad beam.)

Is the transducer unit only recommended for use while trolling and the GPS can be used anytime?

Does it also display the depth around me so I know if I am in the channel from an arial view?

Shows depth directly below the transducer. Yes, it should be used while trolling and GPS used anytime.

Depth capability is affected by such factors as boat speed, wave action, bottom hardness, water conditions and transducer installation.

I understand there is sonar which displays the current depth. I also understand that the GPS Chartplotter displays contour shading. But will the charts show labels for depths?

This unit will show you the current depth on the screen in feets, example 29.2 ft. Also, has depth lines which you can turn off or on. Depth colors/shading is options with the purchase of LakeMaster Charts only.

I'm curious if one can use the entire screen for the nav functions.

For that matter, can the screen be used as full screen for both functions? (At separate times of course)
