For conditions that require power rather than speed, gear ratios of around 4:1 work well. The lower ratio transmits much more torque from the handle to the spool, which offers the fisherman more cranking power to muscle in larger and harder-fighting fish.The 5.4:1 gear ratio is good for all-around fishing and is standard. This ratio has a relatively balanced rate of retrieve that works well for a range of fishing conditions. 7.1:1 are considered super high-speed reels. These reels provide a high level of control over the retrieval speed of a specific lure.
The easiest way to cast farther is to carry a little more line in the air, and shoot more line on the final cast and throw the line a little harder.

Just bought the Tour KVD and I am not dissapointed. This is the Second tour series I have bought. I also have the pt energy and it is nice but nothing like the tour series. The KVD is a reel that you can use for the next 20 years and not have to upgrade to another. Well worth the $$.

Can't always go by the price tag, but the tour KVD is a better quality reel. Better quality bearings, finish is more durable....etc. The Reax would probably do what you want it to though. Comes down to personal preference....Mine, would be to get a Shimano, or try one of the Johnny Morris elites new for 2011. Excellent overall value!Details:

absolutely worth the price, dont sacrafice quality over price. you cant go wrong with this reel.....i have about 10 hours using this reel and have had absolutely no problems landing multiple 5LB Wipers, a couple of striper and several bass including a few 4+ LB bass and several crappie. paired it with the 7'4" crankin rod with fireline braid and its amazing.........casts over 40 yards with no backlash.......just get it tuned properly and reel comes with instructions on how to balance it with the proper weight.A:

As you can see on the site the KVD signature models are marked up in price from the std. Quantum reels. I have the std tour models, both spinning and casting and they all work great with no problems. I would stay away from the titanium finished reels. I did have 2 of them start flaking off from the salt from sweating on them in the summer heat. Other than that problem I have no complaints about the smoothness or durability of the PT reels. BTW, Quantum replaced both reels free of charge.

NO, NO, NO pair it with a Quantum KVD SIgnature series or the KVD Crankin rod. the Crankin rod is about 50$ more but way worth it and the signature series rod is about 30$ cheaper and very well worth it. I have both and have absolutely ZERO complaints.....you might also try the Abu Garcia Veritas.........Solid rod as well, you can feel all the bumps in the water with that rodA:
I bought the Carrot Stick with the intention of pairing it with my KVD tour reel but once I got it I went out and bought another St. Croix Mojo. Nothing against the Carrot Stick, but for the KVD I liked the Mojo. I still fish the Carrot but oddly enough I paired it with a Pfleuger Echelon reel rather than a high dollar reel.A:

I have this reel on the E-21 #CMG731MH-F-C. I'm using 14# flouro with it and it handles great. I use this for cranking, not flipping jigs. It is really smooth as a reel with 10+ bearings should be. Best advice, this is a reel used by world champions and advanced amateurs. It has 2 cast controls but still requires a deft touch to use. Enjoy, I do!!A:
I cant say if the reel is a good fit for the rod, but I have the 6'9 MH carrot stix rod and love it! I put a chronarch 100D7 on it and it feels like a match made in heaven. Overall a very light and extremely comfortable match. I know everyone has their preferences, but you should definately put a chronarch on it in store, and just see how it feels for yourself. both reels are $299...so good luck in your choosing.I feel like the line guide on the quantums have a tendency to get in the way of my thumb as I palm the reel.
I had a pflueger patriach on it as well ($249), and depending on your hand size, this could be a good fit. The pflueger patriarch ( the blue one with the carbon fiber handle) performed great for me, but was a bit too small for my hand. Good luck!

I haven't used them for salmon or steelhead. But I have caught some big bass, catfish, and an occasional gar. It's a tough reel. The drag is super smooth. I don't like the shiny finish on these reels. They will soon start to flake off.

The new KVD reels are pretty sweet i love mine and you can cast a bait a mile. remember it isnt the 60.00 one those are bad reels. its the new silver and red one he has got outA:

Anything by Quantum is well worth buying. I used to use all kinds of companies . They all fell apart by now. I still have Quantum reels from 1992 and they are as smooth as the new.A:
