I recently picked one up and it is my first baitcast reel and wanted more of a all around reel but was just wondering how well the 6.4:1 would work with crankbaits.

I am sure that this reel will work fine but I would vary your speed retrieve and adjust accordingly to the size of the crankbait and the conditions.

I think the 6.4:1 STX will work fine for crankbaits. Although lower geared reels are recommended for crankbaits. You can slow your retrieve speed down . The perfect all around gear ratio if your looking for one reel to work for multiple applications.

Adjust you reel according to the size of the bait that you are going to use.
Then adjust the brakes.
The brakes only control the spool as it slows down.

Well since the silver max is a magnetic based reel which brakes the best toward the end of the cast when spool rpm's are low. I would depending on you skill level just turn them to the max when you have the most weight allowed for the rod you have it on and lower from there as you go down in your rod's weight rating but you should always have them on for most situations. But just as a curiosity what reels are you looking at.

The better you get at thumb control the less brake you will need. I only use brakes if I am throwing a lighter bait into the wind.

I would go with the 6.4:1, that way you will have some cranking power. I have the winch series, they have 5.4:1 gear ratios and the lower ratio works great for crankbaits!

Really depends on the kind of fishing you are doing.I really think that if your going to have just 1 reel, The 6.4:1 reel is a better all around choice for most types of fishing situations.

It depends more on what you like to fish with. If you are only going to fish with fast moving lures (rat-l-traps, crankbaits, spinnerbaits) you might want the 7.1:1. However, I have the 6.4:1 and I use for everything from plastics/jigs to crankbaits and rat-l-traps and I have no complaints.

If you plan on only throwing "fast" lures, get the 7.1 but either way you can't go wrong with this reel.

I second the Berkley "shock" rods. Many break their rod tips on more expensive rods just setting the hook. The shock rods have a small amount of glass mix. Not as light as some of the other rods, but it is still very light weight. I think they are the best bang for the buck at $50

Stick with your G-Loomis rods. You will be much happier in the long run. The combo does not balance out as well as you would think, which reduces the sensitivity of the rod, which equals more lost fish. I have found that the Vengeance series is fine for the low $$ amount that you are spending, but there are better rods for just a bit more cash. I would check in to a few more options before you jump on that rod.

Push them out and you are turning them on. Pull them in and they are off. It is exactly the same as the curado.

The answer to your question is absolutely. The drag system on the STX is above average. It is smooth from start to finish. 24lbs of pressure is plenty for most fresh water fish, and the dual brakes make fishing with it a breeze

Doesn't really have the line capacity for heavy line like 50LB. braid and once you cast out a large lure your line per turn is dramatically reduced giving you a much slower retreive. I feel confident they will handle the incidental muskie catch as I have seen a 21 pounder caught during our bass tournement on this exact reel, but recomend the abu garcia record or the toro for muskie specific fishing.

I think the main difference is the dual brake system of the STX. SX only has a weak magnetic brake.

I have both, the SXT is the better of the two in both casting distance and smoothness..
The STX has more bearings, it has a better drag in my opinion, but that's just me, both naybe the same system of gears?
I work both on 7' foot rods, I flip, cast crank baits, an even worm fish..Both are great reels, but again the SXT is the best for longer cast smoother running...

I have an SX and it does not have the dual cast control where the STX does have it. The ONLY complaint I have with the SX is that the magnetic adjustment is sometimes not enough and will bird nest easily. SX is a nice reel, but the dual breaking is worth the extra money IMHO. I have not used an STX, but have used the SKT with the dual breaking and it is SWEET! May be other differences, (Bearing counts…) but that is the only one that I know you will notice.
