Yes, it will work for Woman. The chest size might be a bit larger. Example a S/M 32"-40" for mens and a womens should be about 33"-36". See size chart online.

Details: 
The reason why I am asking is because I purcahsed a Medium sized life jacket from Bass Pro Shop recently... and the fits way too snug. Almost at the point where it is constricting my breathing. Thank you.

I am 5'9 and weigh 200lbs and can fit in a L/XL comfortably if that helps. A XXL would be to loose for me. Not sure about the S/M though.

I bought one of these for my son, who is slightly larger than you. Also, his chest size may be larger than yours, but he ended up fitting comfortably in the L/XL sized vest.

I mainly got it for my friend to use. I have to have a floatation device for every person. My friend hasn't tried it on yet. He is about that size. I'll let you know. For me with a big jacket on it fits good

I bought large, I am 5, 10. at 200 lbs. Fit pretty good. If I was you I would go with XL just to be a little more comfortable.
