Any light to medium weight straight pole. Because it is an under spin the pistol grip will not work.

Hi BobbyD -

I just reviewed the 276UI, and have 2 of these. One on an Ultra Light (Ugly Stik Lite 5' model) and LOVE it.

However, I think it would best be paired with a Medium-Light model. My other is on a 6' BPS Micro-Lite model.

But I''ve so enjoyed the feel of the Ugly Stik that I'm looking for their 5' 9" Medium-Light model (found at Gander Mountain).

To sum up: UL is okay, Light would be good, Medium-Light probably best. Your mileage may vary.

A:
Retrieve rates are list as gear ratio. this one is 3.2 to one which is on the slow slide. 6 to 1 would be on the higher side.

Update to my last answer - according to the BPS catalog, the 276Ui has a 19" retrieve.

Definitely not in line with my own test using a tape measure and reeling in a weight one full turn of the handle, but ...

The ratio is 3.6:1, and by my measurements using a measuring tape and reeling in a weight, one revolution of the crank brought in 24".

This is obviously unscientific, but there you go.

You want a spinning rod since this is an under spin configuration (you want no "trigger" on the rod as in a spin cast rod). The weight and size of this reel is fairly big. Think medium action rods of 7 feet or so to balance well . This reel would be too heavy for an ultralight rod in my opinion.
