Details:
Mon X is more money and 5 oz heavier than the ATB with less magnification. I assume this has to do with lens size, but how much difference will 3 mm make in light gathering? I think I would rather have the extra magnification. Is there something I'm missing or not accounting for? Wish the Mon X came in a 12 power......

A:
The difference is slight but important long term. More is better for light ambiance gathering and also structure is able to absorb abuse.

I took a quick look at the Nikon Site and one of the differences I noticed between the Monarch ATB's and Monarch X is that the X has fully multi coated lenses. If I understand this correctly by multi coating lenses it allows for better transmission of light through the lenses to the eyes. It appears that both the ATB's and the X have the dielectric coated roof prisms. The best way I've found to see the difference in "brightness" and clarity of the binoculars is to go into the store and compare company x's 10x42 to company y's 10x42. You will see a difference if you take the time.
