This particular line that I purchased is recommended by the manufacturer as suitable for "trotlines'.

It could be used on a 'deep sea' (open faced) reel for special purposes. Keep in mind that this is not a normal fishing line.

I use it for many purposes.

Current strength ratings as of this date (Wed., March 09, 2011) are:

#18 = 165 pounds tensile (breaking) strength
#36 = 320 pounds tensile strength

It shouldn't be used on either as it is not monofiliment line.

I have lifted objects that weigh greater than fifty pounds. I am sure it can hold a greater weight. However, I cannot give you a specific weight rating. It does hold alot.
