The secret to its bug barrier is the repellent mat that begins heating up when the lantern is turned on. As the 4 LEDs in the base light up, they heat the mat and silently release an odor-free chemical that creates a 15'x15' bug-free comfort zone. Runs on 1 butane cartridge and 4 AA batteries (included). Also includes 3 repellent mats for up to 12 hours of protection.
