Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid: One of the Most Dynamic, Immersive Retail Stores in the World to Open in Spring 2015

Accepting Hotel Reservations for 100-room Big Cypress Lodge Starting November 17

Pyramid ExteriorMEMPHIS, Tenn. – Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid is set to open in spring 2015 as one of the most dynamic, immersive retail experiences in the world. In addition to vast assortments of outdoor gear, the new mega store will include a grand hotel, 600,000 gallons of water features; a cypress swamp with 100-foot-tall trees; an interactive National Waterfowling Heritage Center by Ducks Unlimited; and a breathtaking glass-floored cantilevering observation deck at the top of the 32-story steel pyramid, Bass Pro Shops officials announced today.

“This will be one of the most dynamic retail stores in the world,” said Bass Pro Shops Founder and CEO Johnny Morris. “Developing the store has been a tremendous undertaking and represents the largest investment we’ve ever made, not only financially but in terms of time, energy and effort, in a retail store anywhere outside our national headquarters in Springfield, Missouri,” Morris said. “We are optimistic that what our team is collectively creating will set a new benchmark as a national, must-see retail, hotel, conservation and entertainment destination experience. The remarkable physical structure of the Pyramid has given us the opportunity to create one of the most incredible retail environments ever. We are excited to be a part of the transformation of this iconic structure in the city of Memphis.”

Interior ConceptSince 2012, the large-scale retail project has been under construction inside the iconic Memphis Pyramid—former sports arena for the University of Memphis men’s basketball program and the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies. Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in the Pyramid will house dynamic features across an expansive 535,000-square-foot space, including:

Grand Entry

  • A giant cypress swamp environment with ponds, alligator pools and duck aviaries
  • Ten aquariums with 600,000 gallons of water, teeming with more than 1,800 fish
  • Big Cypress Lodge, a grand, full-service 100-room hotel with tree-house cabins, banquet rooms and spa
  • The largest assortment of waterfowl and related hunting equipment ever assembled.
  • The store will contain an astonishing 26+ million cubic feet of volume
  • The new Ducks Unlimited National Waterfowling Heritage Center, an interactive wetlands and waterfowl education museum that will showcase the history of waterfowling and wetlands conservation, and include a waterfowl identification kiosk, wetlands exhibit and onsite expert waterfowl staff
  • Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill, a nautical-themed restaurant with a saltwater aquarium and a 13-lane bowling alley that offers a chance to bowl “in the ocean” amid under-water scenery and ball returns that resemble sharks and alligators
  • The “Sky High Catfish Cabin,”  a restaurant, bar and massive aquarium situated at the apex of the Pyramid, 300 feet above the Mississippi River
  • A vast retail complex featuring many unique outdoor specialty shops such as the Beretta Gallery that will offer customers premium grade firearms, custom fittings, sport clothing for men and women along with shooting-related accessories
  • Direct access to the Mississippi River to host local, regional and national fishing tournaments

“Throughout the entire process it has been inspiring to work alongside Johnny Morris,” said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton. “Johnny was the 2008 National Retail Innovator of the Year, and is kinda like the Walt Disney of retail as far as creating exciting customer experiences and environments. It’s been fun to work with Johnny and the remarkable Bass Pro Shops team to make sure that every detail—from the signature décor of the Big Cypress Lodge to the 84,000-gallon alligator pond habitat—will create a uniquely immersive experience that will launch the Pyramid as a national tourist destination.”

At the centerpiece of the Pyramid is a 28-story glass elevator, the tallest freestanding elevator in America. As envisioned by Morris, guests can ride to the peak of the Pyramid and take in sprawling riverfront views from cantilevering glass-floored outdoor observation decks patterned after the Grand Canyon skywalk, with fortified glass floors.

In a nod to its location along the river and the famous Mississippi Flyway, Bass Pros Shops at the Pyramid will offer the largest assortment of waterfowl and related hunting equipment ever assembled and will serve as the company’s national waterfowl center.

“The retail waterfowl center will be the headquarters for all of our stores and will be staffed by waterfowl experts,” said Bass Pro Shops Director of Conservation Martin MacDonald. “The Pyramid is truly a unique blend of retail, educational and immersive experiences for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.”
Big Cypress Lodge
The Pyramid is the first Bass Pro Shops to contain a world-class hotel within the nature-themed retail store environment. Big Cypress Lodge will offer 100 rustic rooms inspired by vintage duck hunting camps and tree-house cabins nestled at the top of towering 100-foot-tall cypress trees. Conference and banquet rooms, a fitness center and a full-service spa complete the accommodation package. The hotel is now accepting reservations for spring 2015, in advance of the annual Memphis in May International Festival, at 1-800-BC-LODGE (225-6343).

Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid is renewing an icon in the city of Memphis and making a strong, positive economic impact on the region. More than 1,600 jobs have been created as a result of the project, with more than 450 contract personnel currently working onsite and 600 Bass Pro Shops associates to be hired in 2015 for the restaurants, hotel and the retail store.
