Sun Protection

Stop UV destruction, use sun protection products
Mike Huffman

Sun and wind protection measures are important for every angler, regardless of pride or complexion.

Those of us who spend our work week indoors are especially susceptible to prolonged exposure, and trophy sunburns are a big conversation starter in bonefish camps. Then there's the veteran guide who's spent 40 years on the water, making a living, seemingly immune to the sun's damaging rays. He, too, pays for the neglect -- only later.

Modern fly fishers are fortunate to have so many newly developed products that minimize sun and wind exposure. Sunburns hurt like crazy and can ruin your dream trip before it's really even started. That's why sun and wind protection should be a KEY consideration in your packing checklist.

Most of these new technologies come in the form of fabrics that protect primary exposure points -- noses, ears, hands and arms -- from damaging sunlight, while doing very little to inhibit the body's ability to function under extreme tropical conditions. Lastly, but most primary for the angler, the new designs protect while still allowing freedom of movement.
