Have you ever wondered what it'd be like to quit your day job and spend a few months in pursuit of adventure and fish? You know the dream...the one where you pack up the 4x4 with all your fly gear, camping supplies and provisions (both liquid and solid) and take to the open road in search of those magical, exotic waters you only read about in fly-fishing magazines and see on TV? Then, of course, there are the fish. Big -- I mean ridiculously big -- beautiful trout with more color than a Crayola crayon box?

Adventure and freakishly huge trout -- this is what The Trout Bum Diaries is all about. This documentary-style film chronicles the journey of four passionate fly anglers as they embark on a 5-month-long angling expedition, covering over 7,000 miles of the South American landscape, in search of wild trout. Throughout their quest, these 20-somethings encounter exotic cultures, beautiful landscapes and crystal-clear, trout-filled waters.

If the description I've given so far sounds like something completely different from the instructional fishing videos currently housed in your DVD collection, that's because it is. The Trout Bum Diaries forgoes the traditional topics normally discussed in fly-fishing videos such as fly selection, casting technique, line mending strategies and other such important, yet dry technical information and focuses instead on the excitement of traveling to new, often unexplored territories and the thrill of the pursuit of big, beautiful fish.

Let it be known -- this is not your father's fly fishing video. The Trout Bum Diaries is more reminiscent of the film style found in extreme sports videos rather than what we've come to expect from the fishing film genre. The soundtrack, an eclectic mix including everything from funky keyboards, classical guitar and traditional pipe music, also reflects a division from the traditional fishing video genre.

To whom would I recommend The Trout Bum Diaries? That's easy: anyone even remotely interested in fly fishing. There's no doubt that the young crew made this film with a twenty-something fly-fisher in mind, but anyone with a sense of adventure, love of fly fishing or appreciation for the documentary style will enjoy this film.

Visually stunning, The Trout Bum Diaries is an exciting film that portrays the emergence of a new breed of angler who's just as interested in adventure, beauty and truth as he is with the trout he pursues. No, The Trout Bum Diaries won't help you improve your cast or increase your understanding of entomology. But, truth be told, there are tons of other videos available out there that do those things quite well. The Trout Bum Diaries is unique, and what it should do is help rekindle your sense of adventure and further embrace your love of the sport.
