There isn't anything more frustrating than trying to control your boat on a windy day with an underpowered, poorly-made trolling motor. While your buddy on the back deck futilely jigs away, you've got the power cranked up to 10, fighting the wind to maneuver your boat over a school of shad you've located on your sonar. As soon as you get there, it takes everything that little motor's got to keep you on top of the ball you saw on your graph, and after a few minutes trying to stay on top of it, you sulk off into a nearby windless cove defeated.
Scenes like the one above happen every day on my local lake, and I'm sure you've witnessed similar situations yourself. People often underestimate the importance of boat control and, in an effort to save a few bucks, buy a trolling motor with inadequate thrust for the size of their boat. No matter what kind of boat you fish from, it's well worth the investment to save up and get a good trolling motor. It'll save you from a lot of headaches in the long run.
The PowerDrive V2 from Minn Kota is more than adequate -- it's top-of-the-line. I've been using the 55-pound thrust V2 with AutoPilot and Universal Sonar 2 mounted on a 16-foot deep-V aluminum boat. The 55-pound thrust is perfect for my 16-foot boat, and I have no trouble staying on top of fish, even on extremely windy days.
Universal Sonar 2
Universal Sonar 2 (US2) was one of the most attractive features of the PowerDrive V2. The PowerDrive V2 has a built-in transducer that works with nearly any brand or model sonar head unit; all you need is the appropriate adaptor cable for your sonar. And unlike early trolling motors with built-in transducers, US2 has temperature-sensing compatibility.
On my previous trolling motor, I had a transducer mounted onto the head where it was always vulnerable to submerged timber and was always getting knocked around. The US2 transducer is completely concealed and protected. US2 isn't standard on every PowerDrive V2, but if you have trouble getting accurate readings with your current trolling-motor mounted transducer, one of the V2 models equipped with US2 should solve that problem.
The deploy-assist lever puts you in motion and in pursuit of fish quickly and easily. Simply depress the lever to deploy the motor and you're ready to go.
AutoPilot is another great feature offered on the PowerDrive V2. Simply put, Autopilot allows you to spend less time steering your boat and more time catching fish. To activate Autopilot, point the motor head in the direction you want to travel, set the speed, and then press the Autopilot button. The motor automatically pulls the boat in the desired direction. Should wind or waves cause the boat to drift off course, the motor will make automatic adjustments to continue to pull the boat in the desired direction.
AutoPilot also comes in handy when drop-shot fishing or anytime you want to hover in place and fish vertically. Point you boat into the wind, adjust the speed of the motor according to the strength of the wind, and then press AutoPilot. This keeps your boat headed in the same direction, allowing you to hover in place over a desired area. AutoPilot isn't on every PowerDrive V2, but is well worth the extra money spent to purchase one of the models equipped with this feature.
CoPilot Wireless Remote System
When it's time to move, the V2 stows easily and securely. Simply depress the lever to retract the motor.
The PowerDrive V2 is compatible with Minn Kota's CoPilot Wireless Remote System. This system features a small wireless remote that you can use to take full command of the V2's steering and speed control from anywhere in your boat. By eliminating the foot pedal, you can free up space on your front casting deck. In my boat, this means two anglers can fish a little more comfortably from the bow. Again, this is an optional feature, but one well worth having.
The Deploy-Assist Lever makes deploying the V2 quick and easy. Simply press the lever down, the motor drops into the water, and you're ready to go. Minn Kota's Digital Maximizer Technology keeps the trolling motor running up to five times longer than most other brands on a single charge. Digital Maximizer eliminates wasted energy, extends battery life, and gives you more time on the water by controlling the draw of power at variable speeds.
A trolling motor is a big investment -- no doubt about it. But getting the right one means you'll enjoy more time fishing and less time messing with your motor or fighting the wind. Extra features such as AutoPilot, CoPilot Wireless Remote, and Universal Sonar 2 make your fishing experience even more enjoyable -- and productive. If you want the best and refuse to settle for anything less, check out the PowerDrive V2 from Minn Kota.
